DAP cries foul after opposition left out of hybrid Parliament committee

The decision of the speakers of the lower and upper houses to exclude the opposition from the new hybrid Parliament special committee has drawn flak from DAP.

In a statement today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said this was a violation of parliamentary conventions and an abuse of power.

“Opposition MPs are as much part of the legislative branch of the Federal Constitution as government MPs.

“If only the government MPs can decide on the procedural rules of how hybrid Parliament meetings are conducted, this ‘rubber stamp’ Parliament could mean the end of Parliament as we know it,” he said.

Lim said that under Standing Order 78, any amendments to the Standing Orders must go through the bipartisan Parliament Standing Order Committee.

Lim pointed out that save for the chairperson of the Standing Order Committee - the Dewan Rakyat speaker - none of the members are part of the hybrid Parliament special committee.

In a statement yesterday, Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim said the committee will comprise of himself, the Dewan Rakyat speaker, a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Dewan Negara deputy president, both deputy speakers of the Dewan Rakyat and Parliament's chief administrator.

Putrajaya is currently mulling to have a hybrid Parliament where MPs can follow proceedings and vote, amidst mounting pressure to reconvene Parliament.

All legislatures were suspended since Jan 11 due to the proclamation of emergency, which is set to expire on Aug 1.

  1. I hope the Agong sees what Mahiaddin is trying to do with this cock-a-doodle-doo Hybrid Parlimen and will put a stop to it.

Mahiaddin knows he does not have a majority in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat. But PN has a huge majority in Dewan Negara 44-20. By combining the two houses he will then have a majority again, albeit that none of the Senators are elected. So it is still a Backdoor Gomen.

  2. And the Agong endorsed the Emergency?

Will he also endorse this new committee sans opposition members?

    1. A smart way to keep the messy ketuanan coalition from emerging stronger!

Umno elites want dap help while the deadhard supporters want no place for dap!

Meanwhile the ketuanan soup is simmering with all the wrong melayu ingredients to coagulate into the might they so wanted!

DAP goes for that shit-stirring by using that 42 numeric that all these discrete ketuanan freaks/blur-sotong would need to have access in order for their scheme to function!
