Turkey has long sought to revive its participation in the F-35 programme and lift US sanctions on its defence sector

ANKARA: US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Washington would consider selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey after booting it out of the programme in 2019 over Ankara’s purchase of a Russian system.

“That’s a decision we’re going to make… it’s a great plane, the best plane by far and it’s certainly something we will consider,” Trump said, sitting next to Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan after landing in Ankara for a Nato summit.

Turkey has long sought to resolve the question of its readmittance to the F-35 programme and the lifting of US sanctions that have soured ties and hampered Turkish defence projects and has looked to Trump’s visit to break the deadlock.

When the pair met at the White House last September, both leaders expressed a desire to draw a line under the matter, although lifting the sanctions is a congressional decision.

Asked if he would lift the CAATSA sanctions, Trump said: “We’re going to be taking the sanctions off.”

“We don’t want to sanction friends,” he added.

Sitting next to him, Erdogan said he was confident Trump would resolve the issue and end the dispute.

“Mr Trump has also personally given us his word on this matter,” he said through a translator.

“On this issue, Mr Trump always stands by his word. Here again, God willing, I believe a favourable decision on the F-35s will emerge from this leaders’ summit.”

The former DAP MP predicts a wave of voter discontent in Saturday's Johor election as well as in the Negeri Sembilan polls

PETALING JAYA: Former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming said today Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders are in denial over growing sentiment against the coalition, especially among non-Malay voters in Peninsular Malaysia.

He said they had yet to experience the “wave of anti-PH sentiment”, which he predicted would emerge in the Johor election this Saturday.

“It may lead to another wave in Negeri Sembilan and in the next general election,” he told FMT at Menara Axis here today after the launch of University of Nottingham Malaysia’s Asian Institute for Policy and Engagement.

The former DAP central leadership member was responding to criticism of his recent projection that Barisan Nasional (BN) would secure a landslide victory in Johor.

In a statement last Friday, he said BN would win up to 53 of the 56 seats up for grabs, with PH taking only three and Perikatan Nasional possibly failing to win any.

DAP deputy secretary-general Steven Sim later dismissed the prediction as merely an assumption, saying it had no bearing on the outcome at the ballot box.

However, Ong said BN had managed to consolidate its campaign narrative in Johor around state BN chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s leadership and “how they want to bring credible and experienced leaders to lead the state government”.

He also reiterated that PH had yet to name its menteri besar candidate, which he suggested had weakened the coalition’s narrative.

In the 2022 state election, BN won 40 seats, followed by PH (12), PN (three), and Muda (one).

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz today confirmed he did have the power when he was finance minister to not act on companies’ applications for government projects, but said he would ensure that the Finance Ministry considers the applications if they were forwarded by the prime minister.

Tengku Zafrul, 53, said this while testifying as the prosecution’s 11th witness in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president and former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s power abuse and money laundering trial.

Tengku Zafrul was previously the finance minister from March 2020 to August 2021 during Muhyiddin’s administration.

Since yesterday, he has been testifying on lists of companies forwarded either by then-PM Muhyiddin or the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for the Finance Ministry to consider for government projects under the Bumiputera contractors’ programme Jana Wibawa.

These were listed in the High Court as letters to then-finance minister Tengku Zafrul, along with brief handwritten notes known as “minutes” by Muhyiddin on the documents sent:then-PM Muhyiddin’s November 13, 2020 letter to propose 54 contractors to be appointed through direct negotiation or without open tender for 54 projects under Jana Wibawa (with Muhyiddin asking the Finance Ministry to immediately consider the proposal);
PMO’s February 3, 2021 letter along with five companies’ applications for a Pulau Indah highway project in Klang, Selangor (with Muhyiddin’s minutes agreeing for the project to be via a pre-qualified or limited tender among the five companies).
PMO’s March 17, 2021 letter along with five other companies’ applications to build the Klang Utara district police headquarters in Selangor (with Muhyiddin’s minutes also agreeing for the project to be via a pre-qualified or limited tender among these five).

When cross-examined by Muhyiddin’s lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad today, Tengku Zafrul confirmed that he has the power to decide whether to take action or not, as long as companies’ applications reach the Finance Ministry or are brought to his attention as the Finance Minister.

Tengku Zafrul agreed that it does not matter where the companies’ project applications come from as long as it was brought to his attention, also agreeing that the minutes by Muhyiddin were to “bring to my attention for consideration”.

“Yes, but if it’s from the prime minister, I will act on it,” Tengku Zafrul said.

When Amer suggested that the minutes from Muhyiddin were “not final”, Tengku Zafrul replied: “I will act to ensure it is put to consideration.”

Tengku Zafrul confirmed he had as finance minister received many minutes from Muhyiddin, and agreed with Amer Hamzah’s suggestion that Muhyiddin’s minutes to the Finance Ministry or to him by itself were “nothing unusual”.

While Amer Hamzah suggested that the minutes were a way of highlighting matters and passing it on if there is anything to be done, Tengku Zafrul said it would depend on how the minutes is written as “there would be instances the minutes would be clear that you should not proceed”.

“For example, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin can say ‘I do not agree’,” Tengku Zafrul said.

But specifically for the Jana Wibawa projects, Tengku Zafrul agreed with Amer Hamzah that Muhyiddin was merely notifying him and asking him to look into the companies’ applications for the projects.

About the proposed 54 contractors for 54 projects list

Amer Hamzah suggested that the list of 54 companies sent by Muhyiddin to him for Jana Wibawa projects did not indicate “preferential treatment for all these companies”, which Tengku Zafrul agreed to.

Tengku Zafrul also agreed when Amer Hamzah said the list is “also not an indication that any of the companies should be favoured”.

Tengku Zafrul agreed that there was no interference or meddling by Muhyiddin as the PM or the PMO in terms of both the awarding of the projects and the government’s evaluation of whether the companies were qualified for the projects.

When asked if the list of 54 companies being brought to his attention meant that the companies should be approved by the Finance Ministry and awarded the projects, Tengku Zafrul replied that “it means the companies should be considered”.

Tengku Zafrul said he could not confirm whether all these 54 companies have been awarded projects.

Earlier, Amer Hamzah suggested that the then prime minister Muhyiddin “would not be micromanaging every single aspect of every economic stimulus packages” and that there would be officers to assist him, with Tengku Zafrul then agreeing.

Among other things, Tengku Zafrul agreed with Amer Hamzah that the fact that the list was enclosed in a letter signed by then-PM Muhyiddin “is not indicative” that it was the PM who actually prepared the contents of the list.

Tengku Zafrul said he did not know who prepared the list of 54 companies, but agreed that this kind of information would typically be compiled by officers.

The list had listed the proposed 54 contractors, along with the names of the 54 proposed projects along with the project value.

Earlier today, Tengku Zafrul confirmed at the High Court that Malaysia has more Bumiputera contractors than the 54 companies in the list forwarded by Muhyiddin.

Tengku Zafrul also confirmed to lead prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin that Muhyiddin never asked him to cancel the government procurement for KCJ Engineering Sdn Bhd, or the government procurement processes for both Sutracom Sdn Bhd and Nepturis Sdn Bhd.

KCJ Engineering was one of the 54 companies and was awarded a RM62 million project to build a new road from Felda Bukit Jalor to Gemas, Negeri Sembilan.

Sutracom and Nepturis (both which had applications forwarded to Tengku Zafrul) each separately received the Finance Ministry’s approval for the RM605.2 million Pulau Indah highway project and the RM141 million project to build the Klang Utara district police headquarters.

Previously, evidence in this trial such as bank documents showed that KCJ Engineering’s four cheques totalling RM800,000 were deposited into Bersatu’s CIMB account on October 12, 2022, while a RM1 million cheque from Nepturis was deposited into Bersatu’s AmBank account on February 21, 2022.

In this trial, Muhyiddin is facing seven charges, namely four counts of alleged power abuse to obtain RM225.3m bribes for Bersatu (from Nepturis, Azman Yusoff, Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd, and Mamfor Sdn Bhd) and three counts of alleged money laundering through money that Bersatu received from Bukhary Equity.

The trial before High Court judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin resumes tomorrow, with Tengku Zafrul to continue testifying.

ISTANBUL, July 7 — Turkiye today rejected as “disinformation” Israel’s claim that the sale to Ankara of US F-35 fighter jets and components would upset the regional power balance.

Ahead of a Nato summit in Turkiye, Ankara’s foreign ministry slammed the claim made yesterday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The baseless allegations recently circulated by Israeli officials in a coordinated manner and with calculated timing are part of a disinformation campaign,” the ministry said.

“Netanyahu and his partners in crime deliberately distort any criticism directed at them and seek to divert attention through a systematic propaganda effort.”

Netanyahu had yesterday urged the United States not to sell the jets to Nato ally Turkiye, arguing it would “upset the power balance” in the region.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was due to receive his US counterpart Donald Trump ahead of the summit starting Tuesday evening.

Last month, Trump promised to make Erdogan “very happy” when asked about Turkiye looking to secure F110 jet engines and regaining access to the F-35 programme.

Analysts say Turkiye wants to secure the new engines for use in its flagship KAAN stealth fighter project, as Ankara seeks to join the exclusive club of nations producing fifth-generation combat aircraft, which notably includes the United States, China and Russia.

In 2019, Washington expelled Turkiye from the F-35 programme two years after Ankara acquired a Russian S-400 missile defence system.

Ankara’s foreign ministry said Israel’s pushback could not “conceal the Netanyahu government’s genocide in Gaza, its policies of occupation and annexation, and its destabilising actions in the region”.

The ministry added Turkiye wanted to see peace, stability and prosperity come to the whole region and that “with this understanding, we once again call on Israel to pursue a constructive and peaceful policy.”

Netanyahu yesterday told Fox News: “I don’t think (Turkiye) should be given F-35s or the engines for their fighter jets, because that’ll upset the power balance in the Middle East, which is ultimately guaranteed by Israeli air superiority and also by, I think, by America’s posture in the Middle East.”

Erdogan is counting on his good relations with Trump and his country’s return to favour with Washington notably over its support for Ukraine to secure the delivery of six jets, for which payment has already been made. — AFP

Massive funeral turn-out for Ali Khamenei

YES, WE ARE THE BADDIES. The west and its global westernized political-journalistic classes are clearly the people with double standards. And this writer is also one of the baddies, having worked for the western MSM for decades.
On the Iran issue, how quickly people forget! It was just last summer that the western mainstream media widely admitted that Trump and Netanyahu had united the people of Iran.
“Patriotism gained new currency, and national pride was on most lips,” said Tehran-based academic Hossein Hamdieh in the UK Guardian newspaper in June, 2025. That included "dissidents", he said.
Even the wildly pro-west BBC admitted that Iranian dissidents were now supporting the government: “However, rather than triggering internal unrest, Israel's strikes have provoked a renewed surge of nationalist sentiment among some critics of the Islamic Republic.”
The New York Times quoted an Iranian man named Saeed: “Even the staunchest opponents of the Islamic Republic have been humiliated so much, that they wish we would attack American bases, even though they know harder days will follow.”
.
ILLEGAL ATTACK
This dramatic flip in narrative occurred after Israel launched an illegal attack on Iran from June 13, 2025, continuing for 12 days, killing more than 900 people and injuring 4,700.
This was followed by a US bombing of three sites in Iran on June 22, 2025, on fictional WMD claims that were eerily similar to the false pretences under which the US invaded neighboring Iraq in 2003.
The United Kingdom, Germany, and France said they supported Israel, with German leader Friedrich Merz, saying: “This is dirty work that Israel is doing for all of us.” The west’s top military leader NATO secretary general Mark Rutte praised and thanked Donald Trump for bombing Iran, describing it as a “decisive action” that was "truly extraordinary and something no one else dared to do”. (Perhaps because most countries think that following international law is a good thing, Mr Rutte?)
China took an opposite stance, saying that killing people made things worse. Foreign minister Wang Yi said that such attacks “will only ignite wider conflict and deepen enmity”.
China got it right.
.
THEN CAME THE REVERSE FLIP
When a Mossad/ CIA/ NED armed insurgency tried to topple the Iranian government in January of 2026, the western mainstream media then flipped back dramatically the other way – reverting to the idiotic earlier fiction that most people of Iran were united against their government.
Western journalists printed that “NGOs” had discovered that the government had slaughtered 36,500 (or 50,000 or 80,000) “peaceful protesters” in just two days, while going out of the way to hide the fact that these fictional figures came from propaganda groups financed by the US government.
.
FLIPPING AGAIN
Now, this week, we can all see stunning videos of millions of people thronging the streets of Tehran to remember Ali Khamenei and his family, and once again parts of the western mainstream media are being forced to flip once more.
Again they are admitting that the people of Iran, in general, stand with their leadership.
In particular, Peter Hitchens of the Mail on Sunday has openly said that the west has obvious double standards on international conflicts.
Yes, Mr Hitchens, we have all been saying that on a daily basis for years, while you and your employers worked really hard to cover up the truth. It's time for a media revolution.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A teacher and his accomplice were sentenced to eight years in prison and fined RM5,000 each by the sessions court here today after being found guilty of trafficking a woman for sexual exploitation.

Judge Zul Zakiqudin Zulkifli meted out the sentence on Hasfyanizam Mansor, 50, and labourer Fazley Jaafar, 31, at the end of the defence case.

The court also ordered them to serve an additional six months in jail if they fail to pay the fine.

The two men were charged under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, with trafficking a 29-year-old local woman for sexual exploitation at a condominium on Jalan Sultan Omar here at 2.35am on March 11, 2024.

Deputy public prosecutors Ahmad Hafizudin Manjur Ahmad and Noradila Abdul Latif prosecuted, while lawyer Shahir Mat Jusoh represented the two accused.

The Kuala Terengganu sessions court finds Muslim Suhimin guilty of four charges involving two female pupils in 2022 and 2023

Judge Zul Zakiqudin Zulkifli handed down the sentence on Muslim Suhimin after finding that the prosecution had proven a prima facie case against him.

PETALING JAYA: An Islamic studies teacher was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and 12 strokes of the rotan after the Kuala Terengganu sessions court found him guilty of four counts of sexually assaulting two female pupils at a primary school in Terengganu.

Sinar Harian reported that judge Zul Zakiqudin Zulkifli handed down the sentence on Muslim Suhimin, 46, after finding that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Under the first charge, Muslim was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in a classroom at around 3pm on Nov 15, 2023. The court sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment and one stroke of the rotan for this offence.

The court also imposed an additional sentence of one year’s imprisonment and two strokes of the rotan under Section 16(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), to be served after the main sentence, along with two years of police supervision.

Muslim was also found guilty of three counts of sexual assault against another girl, who was between eight and nine years old at the time, at the same location between July 2022 and May 2023.

The court imposed prison terms of seven years, five years and five years for the three charges respectively, with one stroke of the rotan for each charge, as well as an additional sentence of one year’s imprisonment and six strokes of the rotan.

All the charges were framed under Section 14(a) of Act 792, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act.

The court ordered that all the prison sentences run concurrently, meaning Muslim will serve only eight years.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Nur Nabihah Hanim Ayim and Asymawi Ghazali, while Muslim was represented by Nik Radhia Abd Ghani.

DAP leader says Khairy Jamaluddin was more progressive after stepping away from frontline politics but appears to have reverted to his 'old' ways

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said the narrative espoused by former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin was an outdated political ploy aimed at exploiting racial sentiments.

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook has slammed former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for reportedly claiming the interests of Malays in Negeri Sembilan would be under threat under a Pakatan Harapan state government.

Loke said such narratives were outdated political ploys aimed at exploiting racial sentiments to win votes, Oriental Daily reported.

The Seremban MP added that Khairy had projected a more progressive image after stepping away from frontline politics in January 2023 but appeared to have reverted to his “old” ways after rejoining Umno in April.

“The claim that Malays are under threat is an old political tactic. What exactly are the Malays in Negeri Sembilan being threatened by?

“We had hoped that leaders like Khairy would bring about a more progressive form of politics. But now it appears that after returning to Umno, he has gone back to the old political approach,” he said.

Loke said the incumbent PH-led Negeri Sembilan government was headed by a Malay menteri besar, Aminuddin Harun.

He also said Aminuddin’s administration had implemented various policies and initiatives to safeguard the welfare of the Malay community since he took office in 2018.

Loke, who is also transport minister, quipped that Khairy might have been away from Rembau for too long, leaving him unfamiliar with actual happenings on the ground.

Two days ago, Malaysiakini quoted Khairy as urging Malay voters in Negeri Sembilan to vote for Barisan Nasional in the Aug 1 state election to safeguard the community’s interests.

The former Rembau MP said the community was “fortunate” to have had 14 Umno assemblymen in the state government previously as otherwise the interests of Malays would have been sidelined.

He also reportedly claimed Aminuddin was “under the control of DAP” as the party had the largest share of seats among the PH components.

Loke said some politicians appeared to have run out of ideas for campaigning and were resorting to blaming DAP for every issue.

“Everything is blamed on DAP. They even claim that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim takes instructions from DAP. This is the same old script.

“Within both the political coalition and the government, every party puts forward its views. Umno has its views, PKR has its views, and we also present ours.

“In the end, the prime minister considers all perspectives before making a fair decision.”

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Malaysia’s human rights commission has warned that sharing photographs, videos or other identifying information about the children involved in the recent Banting school stabbing could be a criminal offence.

In a statement today, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) urged the public to stop circulating content that could harm both the victim and the alleged attacker.

It said both children were entitled to legal protections under the Child Act 2001 and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, regardless of the ongoing police investigation.

Suhakam said it was “deeply concerned” by the widespread circulation of photographs, videos, personal information and unverified claims on social media and messaging platforms.

“Such actions can cause lasting psychological harm, expose children to public stigma, interfere with investigations, and compromise their rehabilitation and future reintegration into society,” it said.

The stabbing occurred at about 9.30am yesterday while the victim was at the school’s canteen.

Police said the suspect, a 15-year-old student at the same school, allegedly entered through the main entrance before stabbing the victim multiple times.

The victim was rushed to Banting Hospital, while the suspect was arrested shortly afterwards.

Kuala Langat police chief Superintendent Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi said the teenager has been remanded for four days until Friday to assist investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Suhakam reminded the public, media organisations and online users that Section 15 of the Child Act prohibits publishing information that could identify a child involved in protected proceedings or matters, including names, photographs, videos, school details and family information. Offenders face a fine of up to RM10,000, up to five years’ imprisonment, or both.

It also urged the public not to speculate about the child’s medical condition, disability, mental health or alleged motive, warning that doing so could prejudice investigations and perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

Referring to media reports that the suspect’s lawyer had said the child was autistic, it added that, if confirmed, “disability must never be used to stigmatise, vilify, or incite hatred against any child”.

“Every child, including children with disabilities, has the right to equal protection before the law, dignity, non-discrimination, and access to appropriate support services,” the statement said.

Suhakam said the incident should reinforce the need for stronger violence prevention in schools, including earlier intervention, better mental health and psychosocial support, effective child protection mechanisms, and closer collaboration between schools, parents and relevant agencies.

The commission urged the public not to share or forward content identifying children, saying protecting them “extends beyond ensuring their physical safety — it also requires safeguarding their privacy, dignity, and future.”

Raphael Claus is ‘one of the world’s leading professional referees’, FIFA says, following Trump’s comments.

FIFA has thrown its full support behind Brazilian referee Raphael Claus after United States President Donald Trump questioned his integrity following the red card shown to United States striker Folarin Balogun, which sparked a controversy at the World Cup.

Balogun was sent off by Claus after a VAR check in the last-32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina for planting his boot into the ankle of Tarik Muharemovic. However, FIFA later suspended Balogun’s red-card ban.

Trump said on Monday that he had asked for the decision to be reviewed, describing Claus as “a little bit suspect if you check his past”, without elaborating.

“FIFA ‌‌recognises Raphael Claus as one of the world’s leading professional referees and a valued member of Team One – FIFA’s elite group of referees – at the FIFA World Cup,” FIFA said in a statement.

“Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.”

FIFA said Claus was not available for comment, in line with its policy of referees not speaking to the media during the tournament. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said that referees must be respected.

“Once more, I reiterate that we must respect the referees and respect the rules that govern our game,” he said.

“It is very simple and cannot ever be overstated – without referees, there is no football.”

Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s chief refereeing officer and the chairman of the Referees Committee, emphasised the organisation’s faith in the 46-year-old Claus, who has officiated in more than 600 matches in his career.

“Raphael Claus is refereeing at his second FIFA World Cup, having been with us in Qatar ‌‌in 2022,” Collina said.

“He is an experienced and highly respected referee, and we maintain full confidence in him as a trusted match official.”

Balogun was ‌‌eventually ‌‌allowed to start Monday’s last-16 clash with Belgium and was named in the starting lineup by coach Mauricio Pochettino.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — The 15-year-old alleged to have stabbed a fellow student at a secondary school in Banting has been remanded for four days, after her lawyer said the teenager is autistic.

According to Utusan Malaysia, magistrate Maslinda Selamat granted the remand order until Friday at the Telok Datok Magistrate’s Court today following a police application to facilitate investigations into the case.

The 15-year-old arrived at the court compound at about 8.08am in a police truck before leaving around 9am in a police four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyer S. Vijeswari Devi said her client is a person with disabilities (OKU).

“My client is autistic. That is all I can say,” she said, as reported by the national daily.

Police are investigating the alleged attack, which took place during recess at the secondary school yesterday.

The Form Three student who was injured in the incident is understood to have suffered at least 14 stab wounds, one of which punctured a lung.

The victim, the second of three siblings, was reportedly stabbed in the back and face before being taken to Hospital Banting for treatment.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the alleged attack, and investigations are ongoing.

Voters fed up with Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional are seen as likely to back Rafizi Ramli's party

PETALING JAYA: Parti Bersama Malaysia could siphon Chinese votes away from Pakatan Harapan at the Johor election this Saturday, although it remains unknown how much damage Rafizi Ramli’s party can inflict, political analysts say.

Chin Yee Mun.

Bersama is contesting 15 seats, with Chinese voters comprising between 24.5% and 61.1% of the electorate in these constituencies.

Chin Yee Mun of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman says Chinese voters have traditionally backed PH and Bersama is portraying itself as an alternative by speaking up on issues pertinent to the community.

“Bersama may attract support from Chinese voters who have given up on both PH and BN,” Chin told FMT. However, some voters might be a little hesitant to cast their ballot for Bersama, given that it is still a relatively new party and is not part of any coalition.

Bersama’s candidates are also not well-known nor do they have a track record. “For more pragmatic voters, these factors will cause them to think twice (about voting for the party),” he said.

Chin was commenting on a call by PH candidate for Pemanis, Jalex Lee, for the Chinese community to reject Bersama candidates in the Johor election, as it would risk splitting PH’s votes.

Lee said Bersama appeared focused on winning over the Chinese electorate by highlighting issues affecting the community.

Lau Zhe Wei.

Lau Zhe Wei of the International Islamic University of Malaysia said the shared ideology between Bersama and PH would certainly help the former gain votes from PH’s voter base in Johor.

Bersama could be a threat to PH, especially in marginal seats, he said, although PH could “ignore” Bersama in constituencies where the coalition won with a huge majority. Lau said Bersama was not as influential as PH just yet.

PH and Barisan Nasional are contesting all 56 state assembly seats in the Johor polls. Bersama is contesting 15 seats.

Voting takes place on Saturday (July 11) with early voting on Tuesday (July 7).
