Don’t be instigator, Wan Rosdy tells Guan Eng after untrustworthy partner remarks

Umno vice-president Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail says unity government leaders must avoid inflammatory statements and focus on political stability

Umno vice-president Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said remarks by DAP national adviser Lim Guan Eng describing Umno and BN as untrustworthy are unhelpful.

PETALING JAYA: Umno vice-president Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail has warned DAP national adviser Lim Guan Eng against worsening tensions at a time when Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are working to manage recent issues.

Wan Rosdy said Lim’s remarks describing Umno and BN as untrustworthy in the unity government were unhelpful.

“I want to remind Lim not to be an instigator who could trigger bigger problems,” he said in a statement today.

Wan Rosdy said that while some in Umno and BN may also hold critical views of Lim, all parties should act with maturity in the interest of political stability.

“As senior leaders, our responsibility is to unite and strengthen the unity government, not to issue statements that can damage relations between parties in the government.

“The people want stability and solutions, not prolonged political disputes,” he said.

Lim had on Monday described Umno and BN as untrustworthy and urged voters to reject them in the next general election.

He also cited the withdrawal of support for Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun by the 14 Umno assemblymen as evidence of BN’s willingness to set aside national interests for political gain.

Lim further pointed to repeated remarks by BN and Umno leaders about possibly contesting GE16 separately despite being part of the unity government.

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed on May 2 that the coalition is “almost certain” to go solo in GE16, though he said there would still be a need to reach a “mutual understanding” with other parties to avoid three-cornered contests.

‘A stress test’: US-Germany rift widens as Iran war drags on

German official says US-Europe relationship is being tested as opposition MP says Berlin is ‘not neutral’

Berlin, Germany – A diplomatic rift between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the war on Iran has escalated into a broader debate about Europe’s transatlantic ties – while Berlin pushes to become the continent’s leading military power.

Merz sparked controversy last week when he said Washington had been “humiliated” by its failure to reach a deal with Tehran and accused Trump of having “no strategy.”

The remarks triggered a heated discussion that has intensified since Trump announced the redeployment of 5,000 US troops from German soil.

According to media reports, the withdrawal will include a Stryker Brigade currently stationed in Vilseck, Bavaria – a redeployment that had first been mentioned by Trump in 2020.

The announcement comes as Germany dispatched a minesweeper and a replenishment vessel to the Mediterranean on Monday, bound for the Strait of Hormuz. While Berlin has said the vessels would only take part in operations to clear the narrow shipping lane after hostilities ended, the United States has relied heavily on bases and military infrastructure across Germany throughout its campaign in Iran.

Merz – a former senior adviser at BlackRock who has long been seen as closely aligned with US interests – said the troop withdrawal came as no surprise. The defence ministry described the move as “foreseeable”.

Republican politicians Roger Wicker and Mike Rogers, chairs of the Senate and House Armed Services Committees, expressed “grave concern” over the withdrawal.

The move would return troop numbers roughly to levels last seen before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, meaning the operational impact may be limited. More consequential, analysts say, could be a separate decision to cancel plans to station long-range weapons systems in Germany.

On Monday, the German defence ministry said there had been no “definitive cancellation” by the US of ‌a plan to deploy a battalion with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles and SM-6 missiles to Germany.

A spokesperson of the Chancellor’s Office said on the matter, “It is important to implement the development of our own systems in Europe and Germany.”

The US had planned episodic deployments of long-range fires capabilities in Germany from 2026. Due to their long range, these missiles can strike targets deep inside Russia.

Germany is vital to US operations in Middle East

With some 36,000 troops currently stationed on its soil, Germany is home to one of the largest US deployments abroad.

During the Cold War, Germany served as NATO’s front line against Soviet expansion. Until today, its bases are considered essential to US operations across the Middle East, clustered in the country’s south and southwest.

The most prominent is Ramstein – the US’s largest installation in Europe, which serves as a military hub for drone operations, from where transmission of data and video signals via satellite and fibre optics enables pilots in the US to carry out strikes. It also functions as a global transit hub for troops and military equipment, situated close to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, where wounded US personnel were treated during the Iran war.

Stuttgart hosts the US European Command and US Africa Command headquarters, as well as those of US Marine Forces Europe and Africa.

According to media reports, facilities close to Stuttgart have also been used to transmit coded communications to Iran, believed to be intended for intelligence operatives on the ground. Additionally, about 20 US nuclear weapons are stationed in Germany – a presence some critics want removed, while others consider it a cornerstone of NATO deterrence.

Lea Reisner, a Left Party politician and member of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, has been among the most vocal critics of Germany’s role in the conflict.

“The German government claims that Germany is not a party to this war and at the same time, dispatched a minesweeper toward the Strait of Hormuz,” she told Al Jazeera. “A state that provides military infrastructure and logistical support cannot credibly describe itself as neutral. That is not neutrality. It is dishonesty.”

Jurgen Hardt, a lawmaker with Merz’s CDU party and the foreign policy spokesperson of the CDU/CSU parliamentarian group, told Al Jazeera that a “combat mission” in the Strait of Hormuz is “out of the question for Germany”.

“Any military engagement by the [army] in the Strait of Hormuz would require an international mandate and an agreement among the parties to the conflict. Under these conditions, it might be possible for Germany to contribute to the protection of free shipping in this strait, which is vital for global trade. At present, however, it is too early to speculate about deployment scenarios. The necessary conditions are not yet in place,” he said.

He added that the transatlantic partnership is currently undergoing “a stress test” but said US President Trump has ultimately “always stood by NATO”.

While other European countries have moved to restrict their involvement in the US attacks – Spain limited the use of its airbases, and Switzerland closed its airspace – Germany has taken no such step.

Reisner said Germany faced a clear choice. “It can condemn the war as a clear violation of international law, restrict the use of its territory for offensive operations, and join Europe in demanding an immediate ceasefire,” she said. “Or it can continue pretending this is none of its business while German infrastructure plays a role in killing people.”

Real rupture or rhetorical manoeuvre?

According to Dominik Tolksdorf, associate fellow for US and Transatlantic Relations at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), the decision is “not so surprising” given Washington’s realignment of its security and defence policy, announced in its National Defense Strategy of January 2026, “which also has implications for NATO”.

“More serious is the failure to station the Tomahawks in Germany, since Europe does not yet produce cruise missiles with comparable range,” he added.

The announcements come at a time when European nations are accelerating rearmament and pushing for greater military independence.

Berlin has announced its intention to field the strongest conventional army on the continent by 2039.

Defence spending has risen from 47 billion euros ($55bn) – approximately 1.3 percent of GDP – in 2021 to 108 billion euros ($127bn) today, an increase of about 130 percent. Trump’s threats to withdraw from NATO and his erratic handling of the Ukraine war have accelerated the development.

A pattern of tension

Verbal clashes between Europe and the Trump administration are not new.

In February 2025, Vice President JD Vance sparked a furore at the Munich Security Conference when he slammed Europe over issues relating to free speech and migration.

In Europe’s largest economy, Chancellor Merz is facing mounting pressure.

High energy costs in the aftermath of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are weighing heavily on voters, and his approval ratings have fallen sharply.

German industry has already been in a prolonged downturn since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine severed access to cheap gas, accelerated by the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in 2022. And Germany’s car sector – one of the most important sectors of its economy – has fallen behind in the global transition to electric vehicles.

Tolksdorf explained, “Merz therefore wants the conflict resolved as quickly as possible and is frustrated by what he sees as a lack of strategic direction from the Trump administration.”

The government spokesman says pig farmers must also manage waste and pollution with the latest technology

PETALING JAYA: Pig farms in Selangor will only be allowed to operate in areas located far from residential zones and critical water sources, says government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said the matter was discussed at today’s Cabinet meeting, where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also briefed members on his audience with the Selangor sultan, in which menteri besar Amirudin Shari was present.

“Pig farmers must also use the latest technology to properly manage waste and pollution,” he said at a press conference.

In February, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah called for a complete end to pig farming in the state, citing its environmental impact and Selangor’s demographic makeup.

The issue resurfaced late last month after Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki proposed a modern, closed pig farming system, which sparked criticism, with detractors accusing her of contradicting the Selangor sultan’s decree.

Separately, Fahmi said the government is monitoring the critical water situation in several states, particularly in dams with low water levels.

He said mitigation efforts, including cloud seeding operations, will be stepped up to address the issue.

The air force and the fire and rescue department have been directed to intensify cloud seeding activities using their respective aircraft and assets, he said.

Fahmi said the National Disaster Management Agency will coordinate and fund the operations to ensure a more effective response to the dry spell affecting several regions.

He said the government remains committed to ensuring nationwide water supply stability and will continue to monitor the situation.

How KL’s Rain Rave 2026 has turned Tiong King Sing into “GOAT” Tourism Minister overnight

How KL’s Rain Rave 2026 has turned Tiong King Sing into “GOAT” Tourism Minister overnight

THE cyberspace is abuzz with Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing being hailed as Malaysia’s GOAT (greatest of all time) Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister as curtain came down on the inaugural three-day Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026 in Bukit Bintang on Saturday evening (May 2).

It is debatable if the incessant singing of praises on the six-term Bintulu MP is to thwart his bulldozing of the event to go ahead as part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VMY 2026) crowd puller which eventually courted heated exchanges betweem liberal minded Malaysians and the PAS-led rightist moral police fraternity.

Tributes poured in for the Sarawak-based Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president amid detractors in the likes of the UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh – the self-proclaimed staunch defender of race and religion – painting him as a “drunkard” or wanting him sacked from the Madani Cabinet.

Even the Federal Territories (FT) Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) and the FT Mufti Office objected and wanted the event scrapped at the eleventh hour.

Impressive figures

Trending news portal The Coverage Media let the numbers do the talking as to why fiery Tiong is “Malaysia’s greatest Tourism Minister ever”.

“Under Tiong’s leadership, tourism has ceased to be a mere sector and has become the engine room of Malaysia’s economy,” it argued in a Facebook post which has amassed 14K likes, 3.1K comments and 2K shares at the time of writing.

Why Tiong King Sing is Malaysia’s Greatest Tourism Minister Ever

After just three years at the helm of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), the numbers are not just impressive—they are historic.

They are a masterpiece.

“In just three years (2023-2025), the total contribution of tourism to our national GDP (gross domestic product) has reached a staggering RM899.9 bil – approaching the trillion-ringgit mark (2023: RM275.8 bil; 2024: RM291.9 bil; 2025: RM332.2 bil).”
Malaysian Exam Preparation

The revelation by The Coverage Media which became viral went on to contend that “the true measure of a Tourism Minister is not just the GDP spin but actual receipts” which again Tiong passed with flying colours.

Money in the pockets of our taxi drivers, hoteliers, hawkers and business owners. Under Tiong, tourism receipts hit RM359.1 bil in three years (2023: RM106.8 bil; 2024: RM107 bil; 2025: RM145.3 bil).

Tourist arrivals from 29 million (2023) to 38 million (2024) and smashing through to 42.2 million in 2025 – to even overtaking regional giant Thailand.

Over 48 new air routes secured. The OAG Megahubs 2025 report crowned KLIA as the most connected airport in Asia Pacific and the world’s No. 1 low-cost carrier hub.

Kuala Lumpur clinched No. 2 Trending Destination worldwide on TripAdvisor’s 2025 Travelers’ Choice Awards. George Town was named Asia’s Best Street Food City by Time Out.

Ipoh ranked 5th in Time Out’s “Top 8 Must-Visit Cities in Asia”. And perhaps most significantly, 2025 saw Malaysia reclaiming the No. 1 spot in the Mastercard-Crescent Rating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI).

Editor’s Note: The exposé by The Coverage Media came in the wake of self-proclaimed Chinese leadership site Top Leader 领袖 claiming that the Rain Rave 2026 could have attracted a crowd of 80,000 and raked in over RM200 mil in tourist money.

“Conservative estimates show that international visitors comprised around 25% to 30% of the estimated 80,000 total attendance, hence around 20,000 to 24,000 people,” Top Leader 领袖 pointed out in a Facebook post.

Ignoring moral police

Perhaps what makes The Coverage Media’s account of Tiong’s achievement appealing is the way it took a pot shot at the detractors.

“They sit in their state capitals, wrapped in faux holiness, declaring everything from concerts to night markets as forbidden,” observed the self-proclaimed “fastest-growing” social news site.

They try to be the moral police, forcing every Malaysian to live under their narrow lens. But ask yourself: What do they have to show?

Under their watch, their own states suffer from poverty, under-development and civil servants who don’t receive bonuses. They cannot generate wealth, so they borrow to pay salaries.

Unable to build, they resort to banning. They chant “Haram for you” but “Halal for me”. Tiong King Sing doesn’t play that game.

He understands that moral policing doesn’t pay the bills. Tourism receipts do. A thriving economy does. Food on the table does.

You ‘ve not just been a minister. You‘ve been a shield for our multi-culturalism and a sword for our economic revival.

Let the data stand as your monument. Let the 42 million tourists be your jury. Let the RM900 bil be your verdict. Malaysia will remember Tiong King Sing as the Minister who made us proud – and prosperous.

SEOUL, May 6 — A South Korean judge who more than doubled the former first lady’s prison sentence last month was found dead today, police said.

Shin Jong-o was “found unconscious around 1am (12am Malaysian time)... at the Seoul High Court building”, an investigator at Seocho district police station told AFP.

Shin was taken to hospital and pronounced dead, he said, adding: “There is no sign of foul play in the death.”

Local media reported that Shin had left a suicide note, but the investigator said there was none.

Last month, Shin presided over 53-year-old Kim Keon Hee’s appeal trial, finding her guilty of stock manipulation and bribery, and increasing her sentence to four years from 20 months.

The heavier sentence came after her acquittal by a lower court on the stock manipulation charge was overturned.

Shin said at the time that Kim had “failed to acknowledge her culpability and has instead consistently resorted to excuses”.

The police investigator said today that the judge’s “bereaved family is stricken by the incident” and requests privacy. — AFP

Amid criticism, Japanese zoo shares M'sian elephants' latest 'happy' photos

Amid criticism, Japanese zoo shares M'sian elephants' latest 'happy' photos

Updated: 3:55 PM

The Tennoji Zoo in Osaka, Japan, has released a series of photos showing three Malaysian elephants - Kelat, Dara, and Amoi - supposedly having a good life under its care.

This was part of a lengthy blog post published on its website several days ago amid growing concerns among Malaysians over the tuskers' well-being.

Originally in Japanese, the article was written to introduce Kelat, Dara, and Amoi, who were reportedly transferred to the Tennoji Zoo from the Taiping Zoo and Night Safari on March 11.

"My impression of Kelat over the past month is that he's 'assertive, but also a bit of a spoiled child'.

"Apparently, male Asian elephants of this age tend to live alone rather than in herds. So, at Tennoji Zoo's elephant enclosure, we have an 'elephant house' where male elephants can live alone," it said.

However, the zoo said that it decided to move the 20-year-old bull into an enclosure that was dedicated to Dara and Amoi - both female elephants - as Kelat was lonely.

The move was taken after a discussion with a Malaysian staff member, it added.

"From now on, we'll be observing all three. Sometimes they'll be together, and sometimes they'll be spending time separately."

The zoo described Dara, 14, as a "cautious and reliable" elephant that is observant and always watching their actions, while also taking care of the younger Amoi, who is "innocent and adventurous in spirit".

‘Closer to Malaysian staff’

Amoi, nine, was also observed to be closer to the Malaysian staff member than anyone else.

"We hope that Dara will take her time and relax at her own pace, and that she will become more accustomed to life in Japan and to our Japanese staff," it added.

In one of the photos, the pachyderm trio were seen lying on the ground close to each other, appearing to be asleep.

According to Tennoji Zoo, this happened on the first night the three elephants spent together in an enclosure and signalled their supposed feeling of safety.

"Elephants are very wary animals and often sleep standing up. It is said that they only lie down and sleep for short periods when they feel safe," it said.

The zoo conceded that it still has a lot to learn about the elephants, and its new dedicated team is working hard to keep up.

The zoo, however, did not directly address the concerns raised about its track record in elephant care, where critics have pointed to the case of Hiroko, an Asian elephant who reportedly lived alone for years before dying in 2018, purportedly due to an untreated chronic foot condition.

Last week, the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry backed calls for the elephants to be returned to Malaysia.

According to its minister, Arthur Joseph Kurup, there are legitimate grounds behind animal welfare groups’ demand that the elephants be brought home.

PUTRAJAYA, May 6 — Malaysia has successfully recovered RM31.3 billion, or 74.5 per cent, of the RM42 billion misappropriated from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds as of last year, according to Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Speaking at a press conference here today, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner said the achievement ranks among the highest asset recovery rates globally for large-scale financial crime cases.

He noted that the amount recovered exceeded earlier estimates of 70 per cent, or RM30 billion, cited in previous reports.

Azam said the progress reflects the government’s strong commitment to reclaiming assets linked to the 1MDB scandal, in line with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s directive to ensure all misappropriated funds are traced and returned to the country.

“To date, based on available data, the total funds misappropriated from 1MDB amount to RM42 billion.

“The total value of assets recovered as of 2025 stands at RM31,301,717,268.56, equivalent to 74.5 per cent of the overall amount misappropriated,” he said.

Azam said that 1MDB asset recovery efforts began in 2019, with RM1.155 billion retrieved that year, followed by RM14.257 billion in 2020 and RM5.117 billion in 2021.

“Subsequently, RM400.38 million was recovered in 2022, RM8.088 billion in 2023, RM715.95 million in 2024 and RM1.566 billion in 2025,” he said.

The MACC chief stressed that the recovery process involved extensive international cooperation and legal action with multiple parties, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Department of Justice.

He said efforts were carried out through mechanisms such as mutual legal assistance, financial intelligence sharing, bilateral engagements, and cross-border asset forfeiture, involving jurisdictions including the United States, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.

“Among key recoveries were proceeds from the sale of luxury yacht Equanimity amounting to about RM543 million, as well as the return of a private jet and overseas properties,” he noted.

Azam said that Malaysia also secured global settlements with international financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs Group, International Petroleum Investment Company and Aabar Investments PJS, along with audit firms Deloitte and KPMG, collectively contributing billions of ringgit to the country.

The MACC, he said, is also working to recover proceeds from the sale of Claude Monet’s Vétheuil au Soleil, which was sold in Switzerland for about EUR25.2 million (around RM114 million).

“The funds are currently subject to seizure proceedings by US authorities, and efforts to recover them are ongoing through legal channels and cooperation with authorities in the US and Switzerland,” he said.

He stressed that the MACC remains committed to tracing and recovering all misappropriated assets, regardless of location or time frame.

“Insya-Allah, all these assets can be returned to the country in the near future, possibly by 2027. This effort is not only about recovering national assets, but also restoring public trust in our institutions.

“No one will escape legal action, and every sen belonging to the people will be returned,” he added. — Bernama

Sungai Ujong elects new chieftain, old one refuses to budge

Sungai Ujong elects new chieftain, old one refuses to budge

Published: May 5, 2026 10:25 AM
Updated: 6:20 PM

A group of Negeri Sembilan traditional leaders from the Klana Hulu lineage in Sungai Ujong have appointed Faris Johari as the territory’s new undang.

This comes as Mubarak Thahak and his supporters - including the three other undangs - continue to insist that he is still the chieftain of Sungai Ujong.

In a statement today, the Klana Hulu heirs and the clan matriarchs said the decision to appoint Faris (above) as the new undang was reached by consensus during a customary assembly on April 22.

The 29-year-old accountant is the second child of Johari Meor Ngah and Klana Hulu matriarch Shazlina Abd Karim.

In announcing Faris’ appointment, the clan leaders said the process was conducted in accordance with customary law, emphasising principles of justice, legality, lineage, and tradition.

“Faris is a Klana Hulu heir and a direct descendant of Petra Bador, the first undang of Sungai Ujong through the maternal lineage.

“He is also the great-grandson of Petra Ma’amor Kassim, the eighth undang of Sungai Ujong, and Abdullah Luk, the 12th undang of Jelebu,” his official profile stated.

Crisis

The clan leaders had previously moved to sack Mubarak as undang last year over unspecified transgressions - a move which was reportedly legitimised by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar this year, triggering a crisis in Negeri Sembilan’s royal institution.

The three other undangs of Jelebu, Johol, and Rembau have continued to back Mubarak and disputed his removal. Together, the four chieftains are also pushing to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as state ruler.

Last week, Mubarak was ordered to vacate his official residence and cease using his official ceremonial hall - a decision he has yet to comply with.

This is believed to be the first incident in recent history that Sungai Ujong has had two competing undangs.

The last well-recorded dispute over control of Sungai Undang was in the mid-1870s, when the undang, Syed Abdul Rahman Syed Ahmad al-Qadri, clashed with the dato bandar, Kulop Tunggal, who was gaining power through economic control of the territory.

The dispute led to Syed Rahman signing an agreement with the British and accepting a British resident adviser in exchange for military support to secure and legitimise his position.

It is one of the earliest incidents that led to British indirect rule in Malaya.

DAP's Teresa Kok says a comparison with regional competitors reveals a ‘harsher reality’

PETALING JAYA: Langkawi is falling behind regional competitors despite recording 3.2 million tourist arrivals last year, says DAP’s Teresa Kok, who attributes the shortfall to weak state governance.

The Seputeh MP noted that Phuket recorded about 12.74 million visitors between January and November 2025 while Bali attracted 33.56 million tourists last year.

Kok also highlighted growth differences, noting that Bali’s tourist arrivals increased by 17.16 million from 2024 to 2025, while Phuket saw a rise of 4.35 million.

She said that in contrast, Langkawi’s numbers grew by just 311,101 over the same period.

“Viewed in isolation, Langkawi’s figure appears positive. But a comparison with regional competitors reveals a harsher reality,” she said in a Facebook post.

“Langkawi is currently losing the Asean tourism race due to the Kedah state government’s failure in governance.”

She dismissed claims that the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada), a federal agency, should be held responsible for the island’s tourism performance.

Kok stressed that Langkawi is under Kedah’s jurisdiction and questioned whether the state government was doing enough to promote the island.

She also criticised the PAS-led Kedah government for opposing certain economic activities on moral grounds, warning that such positions could constrain tourism growth.

Kok pointed to large-scale events such as the Rain Rave Water Music Festival in Bukit Bintang – which reportedly drew 180,000 attendees and generated about RM200 million in economic activity – as examples of initiatives that could benefit Langkawi.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — The Education Ministry has refuted claims that several top SPM scorers were denied places in the matriculation programme, saying all eligible 10A students had already been offered admission, according to a Facebook post by Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh.

Wong said MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong had recently alleged that the Madani government failed to fulfil its promise of offering Matriculation Programme places to 10A SPM high achievers, claiming he had received at least 11 cases of students allegedly left out.

He said the claim was inaccurate and unfounded, adding that he had challenged Wee to submit the students’ names to the Education Ministry for verification.

On May 4, Wong said Wee later claimed that all 11 students had secured places in the matriculation programme following MCA’s intervention.

However, Wong said Ministry of Education (KPM) records showed that all the students had already been offered places earlier under the government’s automatic placement policy for 10A SPM scorers.

He outlined a timeline, saying the ministry had announced on April 8, 2026, that all 10A students applying for matriculation would be automatically considered for admission for the 2026/2027 intake.

He said initial offers were issued on April 27 via the Matriculation portal, but some students who obtained their results after rechecking were still pending due to incomplete data at the time.

Wong added that 286 students who received updated 10A results were later notified of their offers on April 29 via SMS, with formal acceptance available from May 6.

On May 1, Wee allegedly repeated claims that the government had failed to deliver on its promise.

Wong said he again asked Wee to provide the names of the 11 students, and the ministry also requested the list through MCA president’s Facebook page.

He said the list was only provided after about 48 hours, following which ministry officials verified the cases.

According to Wong, one student had already been offered a place on April 27, while the remaining 10 had received notifications on April 29 at around 11.01am.

He said all students had therefore been offered places before Wee’s public remarks.

Wong also criticised claims that the admissions were due to MCA’s intervention, saying the intake was the result of government policy changes.

He added that credit for the admissions should go to stakeholders supporting the Madani government’s policy reforms.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Umno has no intention of becoming the opposition in Negeri Sembilan and will continue supporting and remain as part of the state’s Unity Government, party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

He said the party’s national leadership has finalised the position of all 14 Umno assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan to continue backing the existing state government.

“We have no intention of becoming the opposition. Umno at the national level has decided that all 14 assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan will remain part of the Unity Government,” he told reporters after the Kami Gen Mara Gathering here today.

Ahmad Zahid said this in response to speculation over the party’s position in the state, adding that Umno has not discussed any proposal to appoint a Menteri Besar from its ranks.

On preparations for possible snap elections in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor, he said all component parties have begun groundwork to ensure readiness, but it is still too early to identify potential candidates.

Commenting on a proposal by economists to make Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) the core of a dedicated ministry for Bumiputera development, Ahmad Zahid said the idea has never been considered.

“It has never been our intention, even if it is a proposal. Mara will remain, for now, as a key agency under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development,” he said.

He added that strengthening the Bumiputera agenda through Mara is in line with Article 153 of the Federal Constitution and the social contract, aimed at improving the community’s wellbeing without neglecting the interests of other groups. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said he has “nothing to hide” over investigations linked to a RM1.1 billion investment project, but declined to comment further as the matter remains under probe.

The Pandan MP made the remarks when met at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters here today, where he was present to continue giving his statement, according to Harian Metro.

“I cannot really comment, but those who have gone through questioning will know the process. It follows its own timeline.

“Nothing to hide,” he said.

Rafizi arrived at the MACC headquarters at about 9.30am in a dark-coloured Volvo XC60 SUV, wearing a white shirt and black suit, to continue his statement recording for a second session.

Asked about the process yesterday, he said he had no complaints over how he was treated.

“No issues with the process. That’s how it works.

“Also, it’s straightforward because, as far as I understand, this investigation is not about money or bribery. It’s about procedure.

“So I think the relevant records are all there — government records,” he said.

MACC senior director of investigations Datuk Mohd Hafaz Nazar was previously reported as saying the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

Rafizi’s statement was recorded after his former aide Chai Jin Shern, also known as James Chai, was questioned over three consecutive days last week.

Mohd Hafaz was reported as saying 22 statements have been recorded so far, including from ministers and senior government officials since investigations began on February 13, 2025.

The MACC opened the case on February 16 following complaints from several non-governmental organisations alleging that agreements linked to the project were rushed and one-sided, resulting in possible financial implications for the government.

Investigators are also looking into possible conflicts of interest involving individuals allegedly appointed to positions in a foreign-linked company after leaving government service.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — DAP is putting its entire party machinery on standby to face the possibility of snap elections in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor, the party announced today following a high-level meeting.

The directive comes in response to the ongoing political crisis in Negeri Sembilan, which the party described as a failed attempt to bring down the state’s Unity Government.

In a statement following its monthly Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke also reaffirmed the party’s complete support for incumbent Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

“DAP will continue to support and give its full backing to Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun as menteri besar of Negeri Sembilan,” Loke said.

“DAP will not agree to any proposal for a change of menteri besar at this time.”

The party also pledged its loyalty to the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, and acknowledged his recent decree that the state government should continue to function as usual under Aminuddin’s administration.

DAP added that all issues involving the royal institution must be handled with full respect for the state’s constitution.

Last month, Negeri Sembilan Umno briefly threw the state government into crisis when its lawmakers openly withdrew their support from Aminuddin as MB, ostensibly over his handling of a rare royal dispute in the state.

The group reversed course before the move could be cemented in a vote of no-confidence, although there are still pockets within the party that insist on breaking the alliance with Pakatan Harapan.

GEORGE TOWN, May 5 — Penang is bidding for over 20 Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) that have been relocated due to the conflict in the Middle East.

Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) chief executive officer G. Ashwin said a majority of MICE events in the Middle East have to be relocated to the Asia Pacific.

“So far, we have shortlisted more than 20 events to bid for and this shortlist may increase as time goes,” he told reporters at a press conference after a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony between PCEB and Marriott International Malaysia to promote the Penang Golf Challenge.

He said there are procedures to follow in bidding for events including looking for a local host in Penang to take the lead in some of these events.

Elaborating, he said among the events they are bidding for are management, finance and medical sectors related conferences.

“The number of participants for these events are more than 1,000 each,” he said.

He added that the events are not only for this year but are spread out to 2027, 2028 and even up to 2032.

“The events we have this year were booked last year or two or three years ago, so the events we book this year could be for the next few years, including one that was confirmed in 2032,” he said.

When asked if there is an estimated percentage of increase in MICE events in Penang, he said they will be able to have a clearer picture by the third quarter of this year.

“So, I would say towards Q3 we will have an indication of the percentage of events being confirmed, but it wouldn’t stop there, it still goes to 2027, 2028, 2029,” he said.

Earlier, in his speech, Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said Penang remains a competitive destination for business events.

He said global uncertainty is creating a shift in how organisers make decisions in terms of business events.

“There is now a stronger push towards destinations that offer value, efficiency and quality experiences at a competitive cost,” he said.

He said Penang is well-positioned as the state offers a strong balance of infrastructure, connectivity and affordability.

“This presents us with an opportunity to attract business events that are actively looking for high-value, budget-conscious destinations without compromising on quality,” he said.

He said this is why Penang is seizing the opportunity to bid for over 20 business events that are seeking to relocate to the Asia Pacific.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock has filed a fresh application seeking to compel police to open a murder investigation into his death 17 years ago.

The application for leave to commence judicial review was filed at the High Court last month, said lead counsel Ramkarpal Singh at a press conference today, according to Free Malaysia Today.

He said the family is seeking a court declaration that Teoh’s death should be investigated as murder, as well as an order compelling police to complete the investigation within 120 days of the court order.

The court has fixed May 18 for hearing, and the cause papers will be served to the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Ramkarpal said the family had previously written to police asking whether any past investigation papers on Teoh’s death were opened for murder.

He said police replied on January 20 stating that the probe was only for “wrongful confinement” under Section 342 of the Penal Code.

Co-counsel Lim Wei Jiet said the wrongful confinement probe had no connection to Teoh’s death, describing it as a minor offence.

He also said some investigation papers had been opened before 2018, but the focus of those probes remained unclear.

Teoh, an aide to then Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead in July 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, hours after being questioned at the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office.

An inquest returned an open verdict, but the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that his death was caused by “one or more unknown persons”, including MACC officers.

Two special investigation teams were set up in 2011 and 2015, but both cases were classified as no further action by the public prosecutor.

Police completed the wrongful confinement investigation last year following a court order in 2024, and the Attorney General’s Chambers later classified the case as NFA, citing insufficient evidence to prosecute any individual.

GEORGE TOWN, May 5 — Penang’s semiconductor sector remains stable and has yet to show any significant impact from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry, including semiconductors, continues to record encouraging performance despite global economic disruptions.

He said demand for semiconductor products remains strong, driven by rapid advancements in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and global digitalisation.

“I believe the E&E and semiconductor sector remains robust,” he said in a press conference after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) and Marriott International Malaysia here today.

He said the state expect demand to continue to rise.

Earlier, senior political advisor to the Prime Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz reportedly said the effects of the global supply crisis are expected to be felt by Malaysians within the next one to two months.

Chow said current technological developments are a key driver of the sector’s growth, boosting investor confidence to continue investing in the state.

He said although geopolitical conflicts could potentially affect global supply chains, Penang has so far not faced any serious disruptions in industry operations.

“If there is any impact, it may be in logistics, such as slightly higher shipping costs, but overall the sector remains strong,” he said.

He said the state government remains optimistic about the semiconductor industry’s prospects in the medium and long term.

“Penang’s position as a key E&E hub in Malaysia continues to attract multinational companies and foreign investors,” he said.

“With technological shifts such as AI and digital innovation, we see this demand remaining and continuing to grow,” he added.

He said the state government will continue to monitor ongoing developments, including any risks arising from global conflicts that could affect the local economy.
