‘Dump Mahathir’ chorus echoes again at PKR Youth assembly
The PKR Youth delegates gave a resounding ‘no’ to cooperation with Mahathir Mohamad and a big ‘yes’ to Anwar Ibrahim being the prime ministerial candidate in GE15.
PETALING JAYA: It might have been a virtual PKR Youth congress but the calls by delegates not to have any political cooperation with Dr Mahathir Mohamad continued to be loud, just like at the women’s wing meet yesterday.
This was one of the motions passed at the end of the assembly today, together with the call to Pakatan Harapan (PH) to enter the next general election (GE15) with Anwar Ibrahim as the prime ministerial candidate.
Terengganu delegate Yuslaini Azmi said her members supported Anwar as prime minister as the nation needs a leader who can voice the rakyat’s concerns and implement people-friendly policies.
“I want to stress that we have given Dr Mahathir Mohamad the opportunity to lead (under PH) but he resigned. Because of that, the nation is facing uncertainties now,” she said.
Pahang’s Ahmad Saifullah Razali also raised a motion to reject any political cooperation with Mahathir.
He said Mahathir had failed to hand over the premiership to Anwar as pledged and also did not carry out reforms during the PH era when he was in charge.
“He will be a burden to any party as we have seen when he was leading the country as the seventh prime minister,” he said, adding that Mahathir also failed to discuss his resignation with component parties. This eventually saw the collapse of PH.
Ahmad added Mahathir may no longer have a clear vision and idealism to lead the country.
Last week, Mahathir had said he would not work with PH or Perikatan Nasional in the coming elections as he did not want to be linked to their political baggage.
Besides this, delegates also raised the issue of the people struggling amid the Covid-19 pandemic. They said this needed the full attention of the government.
Selangor’s Khairool Ngadon said the rakyat were constantly pleading for financial assistance to survive and do business.
“The government says they do not have the power to direct banks to provide a loan moratorium. Banks continue to record huge profits. So is the government thinking of the survival of the rakyat or banks?” he asked.
Penang delegate Hari Krishnan Ramakrishnan voiced his disappointment over the suspension of Parliament and state assemblies during this health and economic crisis.
Kedah’s Adam Loh voiced concerns over the low registration rate for vaccination in rural areas, as people were unable to travel. “Less than 30% have so far registered in Kedah,” he added.
Loh urged Putrajaya to mobilise village heads and representatives to garner support for vaccination.
Online hiccup causes stir
Earlier, an online hiccup caused a stir when youths accidentally rejected a motion to work with Amanah and DAP.
The motion to strengthen ties with DAP and Amanah was raised by Sabah youth speaker Wendy Agung Baruh.
One of the speakers interjected to say many delegates had failed to hear the motion because of an online glitch, adding that many had also commented internally that they couldn’t hear the motion.
A second vote was then called which saw all giving their thumbs up to working with the two political parties.
PKR’s 15th national congress will be held tomorrow.
