PETALING JAYA: Classical dance legend Ramli Ibrahim has lashed out at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) over its “weak and unacceptable” excuse in cancelling a talk on dance and race.

UTM revealed that it had called off the talk on the advice of its Islamic centre, saying the university did not want to “offend any party”.

In a Facebook post today, Ramli responded: “The only party who would deem the talk offensive would most likely be the bigoted persons in the Islamic Centre itself!”

The narrow mindset the university adopted, Ramli added, was not in sync with prevailing world views.

“This is clearly an unacceptable and weak excuse of a narrow mindset and should never be allowed to be in charge of educating our youths.”

Ramli said it was vital to prepare students for the diversity found in the real world before they leave the “starkly mono-cultural environment of UTM”.

And what better way to inculcate such awareness and inclusivity in their future than to hold dialogues with those who have accomplished much in their respective fields.

Last night, UTM said the decision was made based on one of its guidelines stipulating that any cultural and arts programme must be referred to and approved by its Islamic centre.

The centre had advised against holding the talk — which revolved around how dance transcends race — citing its “suitability factor”.

“The decision by UTM’s Islamic centre represents the university’s stance, which places great importance on programmes that do not offend any party and balances several aspects, including harmony and spirituality,” UTM said in a statement.

  2. With a State Of Emergency currently in force, Ramli could find himself detained without trial for criticising the authorities.

Don't play-play with this authoritarian government.
