Anwar Ibrahim says if the government needs to help through affirmative action, it must be through need-based policies |
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim tonight said the race-based New Economic Policy (NEP) must go, saying this was not sustainable in the long run.
“After 60 years of independence, we recognise clearly the provisions of the constitution, of Malay privileges, Islam as the religion of the federation, the status of the national language and the sovereignty of the (Malay) rulers.
“But we know that the country must progress as a big family.”
Anwar explained that this means “if at all we need to help through affirmative action”, it must be through need-based policies and not race-based policies.
“I remain confident that it (this change) will augur well for Malaysia,” he added.
Speaking at Sogo’s 25th Charity and Business Partners’ Appreciation Nite 2019 at Shangri-La hotel here, Anwar said he had been calling for NEP’s dismantling since 2007.
He said the NEP was not sustainable.
Sustainability means protecting the environment and having compassion for the plight of the common man, regardless of race or religion, he said.
“A poor person who needs assistance must be assisted, whether he is Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban or Kadazan,” Anwar said.
“But having said that, we must show enough empathy to make sure that people realise that the dismantling of the NEP does not mean that the poor… those in the rural areas or the urban poor… will be (neglected).”
The NEP was an affirmative action programme formulated in the aftermath of the May 13, 1969 riots. It was adopted in 1971 with the stated goal of poverty eradication and economic restructuring so as to eliminate the identification of ethnicity with economic function.
It was also aimed at having 30% Bumiputera equity.

Ok, Ok. So, does it need him to be PM before changing the NEP policies from race based to a needs based system to help all Malaysians?
What's stopping the current PH Govt. to make the changes now since taking over from the previous BN regime?
Is it because of TDM?
Is it because of Deep State players and actors?
Is it because some parties within the PH coalition are not agreeable?
Why so far no actions on this matter and not even giving reasons as to why even after more than 1 year in power by the PH Govt.?
Otherwise, it sounds more like recycling old election campaign rethorics again and again.
Will politicians ever understand what is the meaning of "Walk the Talk"?
Will stupid people like you ever realize saying things to get elected is what politicians do?

ReplyDeletedon't make me laugh, not because of what he said but because you actually believed what he said, for crying out loud, he was speaking at a charity and business partners appreciation nite, thats vintage anwar, but not at a ceramah in kampung baru or in the state assembly or parliament and get this, since 2007? sorry I can't recall an instance, sorry to spoil your dinner but if anybody can do it, it can only be maddy, he is the one who no one dares to go against if he decides it, I tell you he is scary that way, but unfortunately he still has to convince the malays they are not handicap
Affirmative action for small minority groups like native Americans or aborigines in Australia to help them catch up economically with the mainstream population makes sense.
ReplyDeleteAffirmative action for 70% of the population is stupid. It is a clear admission of inferiority and fear of the minority.
Lim Guan Eng and Lee Hsien Loong don't think what they get is an admission of inferiority. Why should Melayu?
