JKR double standards flabbergastingly mucho pronto

Malaysiakini:

After KJ's mishap, rep offers to tumble over damaged roads to expedite repairs

Ketari assemblyperson Young Syefura Othman has apparently offered to tumble over damaged roads in a bid to expedite repairs.

This came after the Public Works Department (JKR) patched up potholes that caused a bicycle accident involving Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin just a day after the incident.

In a series of tweets since this morning, she highlighted roads around Bukit Tinggi as an example of roads that have fallen into disrepair for a prolonged period of time.

Pictures showed damaged drain covers on one road, and a tunnel covered with multiple potholes. One photo even showed vegetation penetrating the drain cover from below.

“JKR’s excuse is that it had asked for allocation (to make repairs) but has yet to receive it. The tree has grown tall and it has been like this for four, five months. Can JKR help me?

“The road in Bukit Tinggi is among those frequented by surrounding residents. Are they waiting for something bad to happen before springing into action?

“If that is the case, I’m willing to tumble over (jatuh tergolek) if immediate action can be taken afterwards,” she said.

Young added that she had tried to pressure JKR to make the repairs through many channels, including through official letters, WhatsApp, and meetings, but to no avail.

Yesterday, Khairy had reportedly suffered minor injuries after hitting a pothole while cycling in Banting and fell into a ditch.

The Kuala Langat JKR apologised for the incident and has since patched up the offending pothole.

However, the episode was greeted with anger and mockery by netizens, many who scorned JKR’s supposed inaction even when potholes have caused fatal accidents and serious injuries.

One Twitter user with the handle @theahmadridhuan urged JKR to apologise to the people as well.

“Because it was KJ, you apologised profusely.

“If that is the case, we need more ministers, MPs and assemblypersons to become victims of bad roads so actions will be taken swiftly to repair them,” he said.

Another netizen said JKR’s apology was unnecessary, as it had never apologised for such accidents before.

“You have just validly proven that it takes a VIP to suffer for the government to take fast, efficient action.

“This apology is not necessary. Why apologise if you’ve never apologised before? Is his life more valuable than ordinary people?” asked Twitter user @SyuhadaShud.

Several netizens have also taken to social media to share personal stories of accidents caused by dilapidated roads involving themselves or their family members.

“My father had an accident after hitting a pothole while riding a motorcycle and had broken three ribs because of that hole. Those idiots still haven’t repair that tarred road.

“This person fell off a bicycle and JKR scrambled to cover the road,” Twitter user @sarahisthatyouu said.

Meanwhile, news portal The Vibes quoted Khairy as saying that road maintenance should be held at a higher standard not just for ministers, but also for ordinary folk.

“Although I appreciate JKR promptly repairing the pothole that caused my crash, I do hope they also respond as quickly to potholes that endanger everyone," he reportedly said.

He was also quoted as saying that he did not only suffered minor injuries in the accident but lost consciousness as well.

The report said the minister had undergone a CT scan and spent a night in hospital following the accident.

  1. Premium Italian bicycle maker Pinarello also apologised (why?) to Khairy and offered to replace his RM45,000 Dogma F10 bike.

  3. Well done Young Syefura, just 29 years old when she became assemblywoman, in SELANGOR no less, where Teng Chang Khim is complaining that DAP is dominated by oldies (but goodies ha ha ha) LKS and Guanee and not allowing younger people from coming through. Selangor was also where Hannah Yeoh became assemblywoman at the same age and then became the youngest ever assembly Speaker. So what is Teng complaining about?

    2. They are all CEC Members, duly elected by the DAP membership convention.

Would you prefer some other way to select CEC Members, so that they meet "Other criteria" whatever that is e.g. must be anti-Lim ?

    3. So Ronnie, Ramasamy, Ramkarpal, Teng, Boo are not....?

Did any one of them get sacked? No.

Did any one of them resign? No. (But Zaid may, soon, ha ha ha)

They decide for themselves which party posts to vie for and they are where they are because they were either voted in or out during party elections. There are hundreds of delegate voters. The Lims have only 2. Nothing sinister there.

  4. Khairy Jamaluddin has a slick PR machine, but I never forget he is just another UMNO septic tank dweller.

  5. Wee KHAT Siong was so eager to please his UMNO-PAS bosses, immediately after being made Menteri Jaga Kereta he introduced tougher drink-driving laws, even though drink driving has been shown to be a minor cause of accidents. Pot-Holes, however, cause so many accidents, injuries and even deaths. So will Wee KHAT Siong quickly introduce a Pothole Law?

JKR owes apology to all Malaysians maimed or killed by potholes
    K. Parkaran -December 28, 2020

On Nov 7, a corporal with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) who was travelling to work on a rainy morning hit a pothole filled with water as he could not see it. The 28-year-old Mohd Husaini Mohd Nasir lost control of his motorcycle and fell off his machine before being run over by a lorry. Unfortunately, the airman died at the scene from major head injuries. Police said then that the accident was being investigated for causing death by driving recklessly. The Public Works Department (JKR) was silent, so was Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). No one was outraged nor did anyone apologise for the death which could have been avoided if the authorities had acted promptly to patch the pothole. No one knew how long the government authority responsible for that stretch of the road took to repair it, if they ever did. Besides his accident claims, the officer was most likely not compensated for the negligence of the authorities.

Fast forward to Dec 27. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was riding his racing bicycle somewhere in Banting. He hit a pothole, fell off the bicycle and suffered injuries as a result. In a Twitter post following the incident, Khairy said: “Pothole, ditch, KJ. 2020 keeps giving.” The 3.23pm post showed photographs of the pothole and a bicycle by the nearby ditch. Khairy also shared a picture of his injuries which showed bruises on his left forehead, nose and mouth. Now, this is the best part. Slightly more than five hours later at 8.42pm, the Kuala Langat JKR responded to Khairy on Twitter. It said: “Kuala Langat JKR apologises for the incident that befell the minister, will take immediate action over the issue and pray for YB’s speedy recovery.” Banting falls under the jurisdiction of the Kuala Langat district. Having been a journalist for several decades, I have written, edited or read countless number of cases of motorcyclists in Malaysia being maimed or killed after hitting potholes.

I cannot recall even one incident of JKR or any local authorities responsible for road maintenance having apologised, let alone take responsibility for such incidents. Obviously, JKR has chosen to practise double standards similar to incidents where VIPs were let off with a rap on their knuckles for violating Covid-19 quarantine rules while Joe Public has to face the full brunt of the law. The action of JKR exposes the pervasive culture that is turning Malaysia into a society that respects and places more importance on the affluent and those in power. A study by a local university on causes of road accidents in Malaysia had shown that 11.25% of the total road traffic deaths are related to road defects. This does not include those maimed. Of these, about 49% are associated with lack of street lighting provision, while potholes contribute 15.4%. These are painful for the families of victims, and we know they are mostly from the lower income category who depend on motorcycles and bicycles for commuting to work or school. Someone has to answer or pay for all the deaths and injuries caused by negligence, poor workmanship and even corruption that has caused accidents of this nature on our roads. In the meantime, I hope JKR at all levels will act as promptly as they did to Khairy’s “mishap”. I am sure the pothole would have been filled by the time you read this. All pothole accidents must become national news. Otherwise, Malaysians may start hoping that more VIPs will hit potholes and fall off their machines to make our roads better and safer.

  6. Wee KHAT Siong complain when a shopping mall discourage people from taking public transport. Minister Khairy get "rare apology" from JKR immediately after hitting a pothole while riding his RM45k Italian luxury bike.

These ministers are too pampered and out of touch.

KUALA LUMPUR – Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has hit out at a mall in Johor Baru after it discouraged mall-goers from using public transport.

In a statement on Facebook, Wee questioned the Angsana JB Mall over its guidelines.

“Since the Covid-19 pandemic, there has not been a day that public transportation such as rail, bus, taxi and e-hailing (services) stopped operating, even during movement control orders.

“Public transport is the mode of transport for the B40 and M40 groups because not everyone can afford to own a car.”

He said that the mall’s guidelines will confuse the public.
