Bersatu will not be another Umno, says DPM

BUTTERWORTH, July 6 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is not going to morph itself into another Umno, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said today.

Dr Wan Azizah was confident there was nothing in Bersatu’s Pribumi's set up either to suggest it was a carbon copy of the Malay-based party that led the former ruling government.

“So it is different from Umno as the party’s foundations are not the same. (Prime Minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (Perdana Menteri), when we were talking about the 21 years of Reformasi (movement), Tun said he was with Umno longer than that and yet left the party.

“So, what I understand is Bersatu’s Pribumi's is not the same (as Umno). Tun, even as a former president, left the party and formed Bersatu’s Pribumi,” she told reporters at a tea reception with the Penang Parti Keadlian Rakyat (PKR) women’s wing at Pantai Robina here today.

Dr Wan Azizah was asked if Bersatu’s Pribumi could transform itself into an Umno like party with goals and aspirations that differed to those espoused by the Pakatan Harapan coalition.

Meanwhile, asked on Dr Mahathir’s invitation to all Malay parties including Umno to join Bersatu’s Pribumi in efforts to unite the Malays, Dr Wan Azizah said this was because Bersatu’s Pribumi, by set up itself, was a Malay-based party.

She said the invite was also to increase party membership and consolidate political power.

“However, I think PAS and Umno have already indicated that they are not interested (with the invitation to join Bersatu’s Pribumi),” she said.

The only thing Princess Iron Fan said above that is true would be for Pribumi to consolidate political power, and then, only half true because Mahathir's aim was to INCREASE his party Pribumi's power by quantum leaps before he leaves us, to ensure his dynasty lives on. 

Princess Iron Fan was not being truthful (and she knows it) when she said when we were talking about the 21 years of Reformasi (movement), Tun said he was with Umno longer than that and yet left the party.

“So, what I understand is Pribumi's is not the same (as Umno).    

That's sheer Kerbau because Mahathir has shown he is still the same old oppressor. He left UMNO because he was being ignored by that party, not because he has become a reformer.

Yes, I know Princess Iron Fan doesn't want to be confrontational, but she shouldn't forget that Mahathir eff-ed up her husband kaukau. It would have been better for her to just remarked "No comment" to pass on her true feelings.

In breach of his agreement to lead a collective leadership through consensus building, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has gradually but surely enhanced his power to become an autocrat, a position reminiscent of his earlier infamous autocratic rule in the 80s and 90s, except that he is no more the head of the then dominant political party Umno, but the head of a relatively small component party PPBM Pribumi (the only Malay-only party) in the Harapan coalition.

It is Mahathir’s continued embrace of Umno’s racist ideology and his propensity for ruthless political intrigues that have derailed the reform agenda and thrown the country into political uncertainty.
