From MM Online:

With tables turned, Najib goes after former Lynas opponents in Pakatan

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Pakatan Harapan’s decision not to force Lynas Corp to remove its rare-earths waste from Malaysia has opened a new avenue of criticism from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Najib made several online posts yesterday to remind the public of the ruling coalition’s previous rejection of the Australian rare-earths miner, taking particular aim at DAP’s Bentong MP Wong Tack who rose to prominence for his strident objection to Lynas.

The Pekan MP recalled that Wong had once camped out for weeks at Dataran Merdeka here to protest against the Lynas Advanced Material Plant in Gebeng, Kuantan, when the latter said he was working to rid the country of the facility.

Wong was finally working for the public and being paid for it now, Najib pointed out, before adding that the former was also appointed as the chairman of the Malaysian Timber Industry Board by Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok.

Wong Tack, MP for Bentong

“But his government is not getting rid of Lynas.

“So, is he working for the people to get rid of Lynas? Or is he getting a salary so that his government can keep Lynas?” Najib said, who also visited Kuantan yesterday.

The former prime minister also posted an undated photograph of Wong, Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh, and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail at an event to protest against Lynas prior to the general election. [...]

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed this week that the government was dropping its requirement for Lynas to repatriate its water leach purification (WLP) residue as a precondition for its licence renewal.

Instead, the firm was directed to explore a permanent waste disposal (PDF) facility to treat its rare-earths processing residue.

Lynas Corp previously insisted that it cannot manage to export 450,000 tonnes of the WLP residue, a by-product of their refinery operations, by September and offered to build the PDF as a compromise.

The firm agreed to build the facility last year following the recommendation from the executive review committee appointed by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry.

However, Minister Yeo Bee Yin then insisted that Lynas must export its waste back to Australia as a prerequisite for Lynas’s licence renewal.

Following approaches by Yeo’s ministry, Australian authorities flatly rejected any possibility of accepting the Lynas waste in their country.

Prior to the 14th general election, the rejection of the Lynas rare-earths refinery in Kuantan was among platforms PH had used to garner public support.

Najib with car-washer Sukumaran & family

Firstly, while Najib has been right to sneer and jibe at Pakatan for capati-ing another of its Kerbau pre-GE14 policies, Najib has been wrong to jeer at Wong Tack, our foremost Greenie who is still very true to his principles and values vis-a-vis clean environment - see my post One Pakatan man true to his principles.

What annoys me most about poor Wong Tack have been the thuggish FB posters, morons, who stupidly attacked Wong Tack for the Pakatan belakang-pusing on Lynas instead of at their idol Mahathir who dictatorially overturns Pakatan pre-election policy to get rid of Lynas. When I attempted to add my comment to assure them Wong Tack is still true to his principles, they railed and ranted at me, and told me to eff off, wakakaka. Eff-ing Guppies!

gullible twerps of our 'new' society
they should be fed to my Siamese cat, wakakaka

ready to obey thy orders, Master, & it'll be a yummy pleasure

Wong Tack has once again voiced his disagreement with Mahathir's pro-rare earth (and yet another about-turn) policy in permitting Lynas to continue operations in Malaysia - see my previous post Anatomy of a radioactive Capati.

eff you Greenies and anti-Lynas idiots

This morning Wong Tack attacked Mahathir's Lynas policy as follows:

The BN administration might have allowed rare-earths producer Lynas Corp to operate in Malaysia due to greed and being dull-witted but it is beyond logic for the current leadership to continue endorsing wrongdoings.

Unless there are some dark secrets with the Lynas deal that the people don’t know of?

If this is the case, the government must share the details so that a solution can be found together.

As the rakyat of Malaysia Baru, the people deserve to know the reasons if we are forced to swallow Lynas' toxic radioactive wastes and subject our children to so many risks.

Wong Tack has been absolutely right to smell of things suspicious in everything Mahathir and his cohorts do to capati Pakatan pre-election promises.

If you read he MM Online article again, you would have noticed that Minister Yeo Bee Yin (and not mentioned) Fuziah Salleh have been like Wong Tack, adamantly against Lynas continuing its undesired operations here (instead of its homeland Australia).

But Mahathir has obviously overruled them in his usual Mahathir-ist way. Pity Lim Kit Siang and his Chye-Chye lack the lampah (guts) to stand up against the Old Dictator for an important Pakatan manifesto or pre-GE14 promise.

Mahathir has been notorious for his callous, cold-hearted and even cruel rare earth policies - see
Mahathir - Once bitten by A.R.E, Twice NOT shy with Lynas.

The sad part has been the PKR (Pandan Cats) and DAP silence on Mahathir's evil ways. They have not done enough to stem Mahathir's old dictatorial manners. What eff-ing 'New' Malaysia?

But who can blame Najib for having his way in a small laugh at Pakatan's expense, though as I mentioned, his attack has been misdirected.

  3. if it was left to najib, lynas would have a free hand to operate as they please, now they have to comply strictly to the conditions laid out for licensing approval, wrong tack need not feel let down or betrayed as the gomen have to take the economy, job opportunities and its reputation into consideration if all stipulated conditions are met

  4. It started under BN and now continuing under PH.

Everyone to blame esp Ahjibkor for allowing it to operate on the first place.

Now, Lynas is truly indispensable to everyone except China for the rare earth it produces.

And Malaysia is trying to use it for global political leveraging which outweighs any local politics.

    Wakakakaka

  5. Come on Wong Tack and Fuziah, organise another anti-Lynas rally....in Kuantan or KL...remember ICERD and Rome Statute rally; that changed the government's mind didn't it...?

  6. The Geopolitics and Geoeconomics now is that Lynas Kuantan is THE most important Non-China controlled source of Rare Earth elements in the world.
There are others in the pipeline, but not in operation.

The other side of the issue is the Science.
The Lynas ore from Mount Weld has NOTHING to do with the Monazite at Bukit Merah, so it must be assessed on it's own merits.

Let the science be handled without fear or favour, come what may.
