KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — Umno veteran Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah today said that if he were finance minister, he would not define the country’s real debt.

The Gua Musang division chief and potential candidate for the party presidency said that Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng lumped Malaysia’s debts together, making it appear that the government’s debt is over RM1 trillion.

“I think it depends on how you do it, but it is not necessary to do it as such (revealing the total debt),” he said in an interview with Astro Awani.

Tengku Razaleigh said he construed Lim’s statement to bring to light the financial scandals of the previous administration.

“His statement on the country’s finances has made people sell their shares due to a lack of confidence in our nation’s economy. As a result, various bodies including the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) have incurred losses, which is borne by the people. I think this is ultimately propaganda that does not benefit anyone,” he said.

Tengku Razaleigh was referring to the fund’s investment value that reportedly has dropped by as much as RM6.09 billion in the month following the 14th general election.

When asked if it was a good idea for the government of the day to come clean on past financial scandals and the national debt, he said it should be frank on the steps that need to be taken.

“For example, if the International Monetary Fund (IMF) proposes steps to take in order to measure our debt, it should be done as such. It cannot be done according to our own whims and fancies,” Tengku Razaleigh said.

  4. Bloody old senile & expired politikus!

"When asked if it was a good idea for the government of the day to come clean on past financial scandals and the national debt, he said it should be frank on the steps that need to be taken."

The 1st step of been OPEN & TRUE about the current wealth of the nation IS too frank to his liking.

Play2 with the wordings for the true wealth of the nation is more to his placating the assumed mood of the investors, both foreign &/or local is his definition of 'frank'!

Does he think those investor sharks r been horn in the game of reading adulterated sopo reports?

Why those econ data cannot be done according to the very basic definition of debts & liabilities? Why must it be done according to the fancy & decorated figures based on International Monetary Fund (IMF) proposes steps?

    Indoctrinated hamba & subservient crown!

Bloody hell, no wonder he has been roaming around the political wilderness for these long years.

Umno definitely needs him to do that proverbial final twist of knife to finish the last breadth!

    Bravo!

    1. Again you pick and choose which you want to hear. Why not see his next statement, “For example, if the International Monetary Fund (IMF) proposes steps to take in order to measure our debt, it should be done as such. It cannot be done according to our own whims and fancies,”.

The problem is, the new Finance Minister doesn't know how to be a Finance Minister. He probably would fail as an accountant too. Accounting & Finance sector have very clearcut and standardised definition of terms they used, such as debts and liabilities. If LGE chooses to redefine those terminology which are incongruous to the sector, nobody will take him seriously and worse, fearful of his capacity as Finance Minister which is the reason why they're running as fast as they can.

  5. Some people believe in Karma. Bad Karma. This may be heading UMNO's way in the form of Ku Li the Nearly Man. Nearly Did This, Nearly Did That. Soon he may be known as the Destructor. UMNO's Destructor.

The last time he contested for UMNO Presidency 31 years ago he lost and the party was declared illegal by the court.

Now he wants to contest again. If he loses will UMNO be declared illegal again?

And if UMNO is declared illegal again will he start Semangat 46 Kali Dua?

MCA, MIC, Gerakan are also worried about UMNO elections. BN's future (what's left of it) is at stake. All their party members are studying their parties' Balance Sheets and Income Statements to see how much is their share when they chup lup.

PAS is smiling. TDM is smiling. LKS can't wait for Parliament 14 to start.

Bring It On. I'm Lovin' It.

  6. Self-serving Bullshit from Ku Li.

He was quiet as a mouse when the Real financial crimes surrounding the cover up of usage of public funds to settle 1MDB debts occurred.

1MDB is a real debt obligation, not a "contingent liability" nonsense because real cash was forced to be paid, the alternative would have hit Malaysia's credit standing.

    THAT would have really hurt.

  7. Amazing that Ktemoc has now officially joined the "cover up problems is better" mob.

What you you don't know won't hurt you right?

  8. Actually, I do wish very much that Tengku Razaleigh wins the UMNO Presidency vote.

His Ketuanan mentality will assist UMNO to Mampus faster.

  11. The "Wolf" is actually a very appropriate analogy, or a Freudian Slip by KuLi (I wonder why he let people use this name as it means labourer) because Irwan Serigala used to roam the corridors of the MoF, ready to pounce upon any money making opportunity and his signatures adorn the walls and documents that will eventually cause the downfall and imprisonment of many.

  12. Wakakakakakakkaka

Kuli teaching Tokong how to cover up like the BMF scandal, AP scandal during his time.

In other words, Kuli is saying, "In Life, do not be straight like an Arrow. The whole world lives on creative accounting, debts, unlimited credit and postpone to tomorrow what is needed to do today to survive as a politician."

KuLi is not a Statesman but a pure true blue politician who only watchout for his own political survival all the time.

  13. Ku Li is running for UMno's presidency. Since UMNo is now the opposition, he is obligated to sound off at the new govt. I get it. Beyond his Opposition-ish sandiwara rhetorics, there is not much there. And it reeks of hypocrisy.

All these years, Ku Li had eloquently kept his silence through the 1MDB fiasco admidst pleas from the public for transparency. At the time UMNO was seen as 'formidable' and almighty, Ku Li 'lost' his voice. But now PH is the new government, our friend here suddenly got his voice back and singing at the top of his voice 'demi negara and bangsa.'

    Wtf.

Sorry, he aint getting the golden buzzer from the masses.

  14. The daily ebb and flow of market capitalisation value of EPF's investments is not a big deal as long as the underlying fundamentals of those companies are sound, and there is no need to liquidate those investments. EPF is a long term investor.
The hot money will come back.

Much, much more dangerous is the actual permanent loss of assets , such as 1MDBs worthless "Units", and multi-billion dollar 1MDB payments to the Fake Aabar.

Tengku Razaleigh was and is silent on that.
