PETALING JAYA: Abdul Rahman Dahlan has resigned as Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) chairman with immediate effect, becoming the latest Umno leader to step down from a government-appointed post.

The Umno Supreme Council member said his decision was based on the party’s decision to retract support for the Perikatan Nasional-led government.

Rahman, a former federal minister, was appointed to the board in February.

In a statement, Rahman thanked former higher education minister Noraini Ahmad for giving him the opportunity to serve as UMS chairman.

Noraini resigned yesterday on similar grounds, and followed Shamsul Anuar Nasarah’s resignation as the government’s energy and natural resources minister on Tuesday, both citing their loyalty to Umno.

Another Umno leader resigned from a government-appointed position yesterday, the fourth this week, following the party’s decision to withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional government.

Balik Pulau Umno chief Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah was quoted as saying that he had quit his post as a board member of Universiti Putra Malaysia because it was his duty as a party member “to abide by and respect any decision by the party”.

The Umno leader also shared his resignation letter dated Aug 6 in his social media account.

Three other Umno leaders had resigned from their appointed positions in several government-linked companies over the last few days.

They included party vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin as the chairman of Boustead Holding Bhd, and Sabah Umno Youth chief Abdul Aziz Julkarnain, who quit as the Boustead independent and non-executive director.

Umno Supreme Council member Razlan Rafii had also stepped down from his government-appointed post as Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) board member.
