Azmin’s aide slams media reports on ‘threats’ over DPM post

Azmin Ali is the frontrunner for the post of deputy prime minister, according to sources.

PETALING JAYA: An aide to Azmin Ali has refuted reports suggesting that the former senior minister may retract his support for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob if he is not named deputy prime minister.

Muhammad Hilman Idham said news reports by Free Malaysia Today and Malaysiakini were an attempt to split the coalition that was backing Ismail and to destabilise Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Earlier today, in an article titled “Fears over confidence vote may swing DPM post to Azmin”, FMT reported that Bersatu and Umno leaders feared that Azmin might not back Ismail during a motion of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat if he was not appointed the country’s number two.

According to a source, if “Azmin does not get his way, he and his gang will most probably become independent candidates”.

Separately, an article by Malaysiakini titled “Azmin poised to become DPM, according to Bersatu, Umno sources” claimed there was a “strong likelihood” Azmin would be made the deputy prime minister to prevent defections.

Quoting two sources, the portal reported that Azmin had threatened to withdraw support “from the fragile Ismail Sabri Yaakob government if he was not given the post”.

Hilman, who is Azmin’s political secretary, said the claims by these sources that Azmin would retract support were “false, malicious and irresponsible”.

“It is regrettable that the two portals did not verify the claims by their sources to ensure accurate and responsible reporting,” he said in a statement.

FMT previously quoted a Bersatu source as saying that Azmin was the frontrunner for the deputy prime minister’s post.

The source said Azmin had more support than Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin because he had brought nine MPs with him into the party and had the support of two independents.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Umno leadership expressed fears that Azmin would be named as Ismail’s deputy.
