Nizar is 3rd Umno MP in Ismail’s list to deny support for PM
Parit MP Nizar Zakaria said he would abide by the decision made by the party’s Supreme Council.
PETALING JAYA: Umno MP Nizar Zakaria has denied his support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government after he appeared on a list of Barisan Nasional elected representatives claiming to be backing the government.
“I obey the party’s decision. The party through (the Supreme Council) has made its decision and ruling,” the Parit MP posted on Facebook.
“As a party member, I follow the party’s decision.”
Yesterday, two Umno MPs clarified that their signatures on a list shown by deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob were merely to confirm their attendance at a meeting among Barisan Nasional MPs.
Both Tanjung Karang MP Noh Omar and Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim had clarified that their signatures did not mean they were backing Muhyiddin.
Yesterday, Ismail held a press conference and presented a list of 31 of the coalition’s MPs who he claimed were still in support of PN, after Umno’s Supreme Council ruled the party would no longer support the ruling coalition.
On Tuesday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced the Supreme Council’s decision and said a number of its MPs had submitted statutory declarations to the King to officially state that they were pulling their support for the government.
Since then, two Umno ministers, Noraini Ahmad and Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, have resigned as higher education minister and energy and natural resources minister respectively.
Besides them, a number of Umno representatives in GLCs and public universities have announced their resignations.
Earlier today, Sabah Umno’s Abdul Rahman Dahlan resigned as Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s chairman with immediate effect. The Umno Supreme Council member said his decision was based on the party’s decision to retract support for the PN government.
Balik Pulau Umno chief Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah quit his post as a board member of Universiti Putra Malaysia saying it was his duty as a party member “to abide by and respect any decision by the party”.
Others included party vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin who quit as the chairman of Boustead Holdings Bhd, and Sabah Umno Youth chief Abdul Aziz Julkarnain, who quit as the Boustead independent and non-executive director.
Umno Supreme Council member Razlan Rafii had also stepped down from his government-appointed post as a Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) board member.
