New govt can’t be proxy, no need for minister mentor, says Puad

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has brushed off suggestions that former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin could be appointed to the next Cabinet to mentor his potential successor, Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Rumours have been making their rounds today that Muhyiddin could be made minister mentor if Ismail is appointed as the interim prime minister.
However, Puad said there is no reason for Muhyiddin to have a role in guiding his successor.
“Don’t make this new government a proxy government,” he said in a Facebook post, dismissing the idea of a minister mentor.
He said the government that emerges from the present crisis must be truly “new and united”, not one “shaped in the image” of Perikatan Nasional.
Fellow Supreme Council member Khaled Nordin also weighed in on the rumours, saying “Ismail has to discuss with the party first regarding his Cabinet”.
The rumours that Muhyiddin could be given a role to play in the new government followed a remark by Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan that the former prime minister was expected to bring some “good news” this morning.
However, none has emerged thus far.
