Didn't Mahathir once say "A one-vote majority is still a majority"?

Malaysiakini (extracts):

'Can Perikatan Nasional last with just 111 MPs?'

Malaysiakini

After the Perikatan Nasional (PN)-led government barely managed to pass the Supply (Reallocation of Appropriated Expenditure) Bill 2020 at the Dewan Rakyat today, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim questioned whether such a government can last long.

He said the passage of the bill with support from exactly half of the MPs in the House raises questions about the government’s authority.

“Can the government last with just the support of 111 MPs, or will there be more episodes of bribery and threats with offers of positions of power?” he said.

Earlier today, the supply bill was passed with 111 MPs in favour and 106 MPs against it. Another five MPs were absent.

The five absent MPs were Maximus Ongkili (PBS-Kota Marudu), Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Umno-Gua Musang), Wilfred Madius Tangau (Upko-Tuaran), Shafie Apdal (Warisan-Semporna) and Christina Liew (Harapan-Tawau).

Maximus Ongkili

Wakakaka - this is part of the myth or Malaysian political factoid that is currently being nurtured by PH and Atuk to diminish any parliamentary majority not in their favour, whether the 'majority' be for rule or passing a bill/motion.

Had that 5 votes majority being on the 'other' side, oh boy, how the 'other' side would have exclaimed in jubilation (of a VERY clear cut "majority"), wakakaka again.

Historic win for Mahathir Mohamad in Malaysia election

As Mahathir himself had said in his 'earlier' PM days (1981 - 2003) words to the effect, "A one-vote majority is still a majority", so what's wrong with PN's 5 votes majority in passing the Supply (Reallocation of Appropriated Expenditure) Bill 2020?

Parliamentary 'majority' rule can even be acquired with less than 112 MPs, as in a 'minority' government, let alone one with a majority of 5.

Also, Malaysian politics has been spoilt over the last umpteen years with overwhelming majority, whether in parliament or in general or political party elections, such as 2/3's or of landslides and tsunamic proportions, thus 5 votes majority would be incorrectly perceived and naughtily presented as not a "REAL" majority.

But 111 definitely trumps 106, whether the majority is enjoyed by PN or PH or Ayah Pin's Teh-Koh Party.

Of course I understand that was Anwar's tactic to shake, rattle and roll PN's confidence and boost the morale of his own side, and who knows, even motivate frogs to jump, wakakaka. OK, in the final analysis, let's admit Anwar is doing a good job as a decent and credible Opposition Leader.

Also, I note that Ku Li and Maximus Ongkili were absent. Their votes would have placed Muhyiddin comfortably at 113, 1 vote more than is required for majority rule.

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah- Malaysia's Man of the Moment | Din ...

And I think Malaysiakini has in its report shown a wee bias in saying "... the Perikatan Nasional (PN)-led government barely managed to pass the Supply (Reallocation of Appropriated Expenditure) Bill 2020 ...".

111 clearly beats 106, yet the report says "... barely ..."? Wakakaka.

  3. Didn't KT recently say: Would You Even Vote For Mahathir's Party?
    Absolutely NOT

Which goes to show that it is important for Harapan to keep the cables with Pejuang's Magnificent Seven open, even if they are frogs. If they jump to PN then the majority would be even more. Better to fren fren and use them to split Malay support for Muah-Fart-Karat and PN.

Here is an image of Pejuang....ha ha ha....

  4. KT's hatred for Toonsie has blinded him of the greater evil - manipulation of parliamentary voting to continue a backdoor government.

A failed vote on a Supply Bill means a vote of no confidence, triggering a dissolution of parliament.

The "majority" was contrived by Art The Fart Harun because he called for a 10-minute adjournment when he realised that PN would not win the vote. Many PN MPs were not in Parliament. Even Jibby was rushed back from the nearby KL High Court to cast his vote. According to Parliament Standing rules the vote should have immediately gone ahead provided there was a quorum.

Opposition questions adjournment order before Supply Bill vote

    17 Aug 2020

DEWAN Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun today adjourned proceedings for 10 minutes before a vote on a crucial Supply Bill to give Perikatan Nasional MPs time to gather.

This happened immediately after he accepted a call for a bloc vote, where parliamentarians state their votes individually, from the opposition.

Najib’s 1MDB-Tanore trial allowed to end early, hearing resumes on Sept 1

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 17): Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1MDB-Tanore trial at the High Court here today was allowed to end early as he had to attend to parliamentary debates and voting.

The trial will continue on Sept 1.

Najib, who is Member of Parliament for Pekan, had made an application through his lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah to end the trial early today so that the former premier could fulfil his parliamentary obligations.

The trial, which began at around 9.40am this morning, had ended at 11.15am after Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah consented to Najib’s request.

  5. "Barely managed to pass" is an accurate description of the status of the supply Bill, though Ktemoc may not like it due to his bias.

In previous years, in the UK Parliament, when some Conservative MPs revolted and voted against a Government bill, newspapers used the description "Scraped Through"
