19,631 Covid-19 cases, 293 deaths, toll passes 13,000 mark



PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 19,631 Covid-19 cases and 293 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 16,468 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 1,179,046.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 1,444,270.

Meanwhile, the 293 deaths take the number of fatalities past the 13,000 mark to 13,077.

There are now 252,147 active cases, with 1,054 patients being treated in intensive care and 525 requiring respiratory assistance.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 5,753.

This was followed by Sabah (2,103), Kedah (1,863), Kuala Lumpur (1,765), Johor (1,309), Kelantan (1,268), Penang (1,275), Perak (1,101), Sarawak (835), Pahang (670), Melaka (623), Terengganu (498), Negeri Sembilan (490), Putrajaya (41) and Perlis (37).

Labuan did not record any new infections today, while Sabah and Pahang registered a record high number of cases.

There were 19,624 local infections today, involving 16,677 Malaysians and 2,947 foreigners, as well as seven imported cases.

The 293 who died comprised 251 Malaysians and 42 foreigners. All but 44 had existing medical conditions while 44 were brought in dead.

Selangor reported the highest number of deaths with 90, followed by Kuala Lumpur (47), Johor (42), Pahang (21), Melaka (19), Perak (19), Sabah (15), Negeri Sembilan (9), Kedah (9), Penang (8), Kelantan (7), Terengganu (5) and Sarawak (2).

Noor Hisham also said that as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate was at 1.05.

Perlis recorded the highest R-nought level with 1.25. Other states and federal territories that recorded R0 levels above 1 were Sarawak (1.23), Kelantan (1.19), Sabah (1.15), Penang (1.15), Perak (1.10), Kedah (1.09), Johor (1.09), Melaka (1.09), Terengganu (1.08), Pahang (1.08) and Selangor (1.01).

Noor Hisham also revealed that the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) had detected 43 cases involving the Delta variant.

This brings the total number of infections involving variants of concern in Malaysia to 690.
