Where’s your support for Ain, DAP leader asks Rina Harun

Besides a RM1 million suit filed by the teacher, schoolgirl Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam is also facing a police probe following a report he had lodged.

PETALING JAYA: A DAP leader has taken women, family and community development minister Rina Harun to task for not coming to the support of student Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, who is facing much pressure after she exposed a “rape joke” allegedly made by a teacher.

“Ain is now subject to a police probe after the teacher lodged a report. The teacher has also filed a RM1 million suit against her family.

“Where’s the minister who had called for strict action when the student’s exposure was first highlighted?” asked Penang DAP state secretary Lim Hui Ying.

Since exposing the rape joke, allegedly made during class by the teacher, Ain has been the face of the push for educational reform, particularly pertaining to the safety and wellbeing of young women.

However, she has not been without opposition, and this week was hit with a RM1 million defamation suit by the teacher who made the alleged joke.

She was also called to the Sungai Buloh police station to give a statement over a report the teacher had filed against her.

Her family has responded with a countersuit of RM5 million against the teacher for allegedly causing “intentional infliction of emotional stress by insulting her modesty”.

In a statement, Lim urged Rina to state her stand on Ain’s case and called it a “disgrace” that she had not been more vocal.

“Ain is a young Malaysian and her generation will be the future leaders of the country. Minister Rina’s inaction sets a bad example for the future leaders of tomorrow.”

While Rina said in April that “strict action” should be taken against teachers who make such comments, Lim said this was insufficient.

“We want our government to acknowledge that it stands with victims instead of just saying the issue must not be trivialised and stern action would be taken.

“Instead of progressing as a nation that protects women, our country under the Perikatan Nasional government is regressing.”
