It is an act of defiance against the grassroots, says Penang division member

GEORGE TOWN – An Umno division leader is questioning how his party can continue to work with Bersatu despite the outcome of its general assembly, when the party had collectively rejected such a cooperation.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the leader pointed to several motions passed by the party in its last general assembly, among which included no cooperation with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP, as well as no collaboration with Bersatu unless it has something to do with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
In response to reports that party vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has amassed up to 114 MPs from 220, the leader said the PN government has since fallen, making such cooperation between both parties null and void.
“To continue with such cooperation is an act of defiance against the grassroots, which are historically the backbone of this party.
“Umno has reigned throughout the decades because it is a party that prides itself on listening to the voices of the grassroots,” he told The Vibes today.
The support from 114 MPs are believed to be from members of Barisan Nasional (BN), which Umno leads, Bersatu, PAS, the GPS coalition, PBS, PBRS and four independents.
The leader said that while Umno may have struck a deal with Bersatu, this would just invite more brickbats against the party.
“It is now left to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide what is best, but we hope that a solution can be found to help the country move forward.
“If sacrifices must be made by the politicians, so be it. To move forward, we cannot be having the same team that failed to deliver," he added.
It was reported on March 4 that Bersatu had confirmed that Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had sent a letter to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, declaring that Umno would not cooperate with Bersatu in the next general election and that the party would only work with the PN government until then. – The Vibes, August 19, 2021
