Islamic laws affecting 'nons'

MM Online article who tells us that 'nons' can definitely be affected by Islamic laws:

FEBRUARY 10 — The past one or two years have seen this country constantly dragged into the whirlpool of “halal” and “non-halal” controversies.

Everything has to be “halal” certified, from Rayani Air to KTM trains, supermarket trolleys, sausages to the just concluded hoohahs over cakes brought into McDonald’s outlets and halal toilets, among many other things, conceivable or inconceivable.

The latest to join the ever-growing line-up is the Made-in-China paint brushes allegedly made of pig bristles, as revealed by Berita Harian as we were celebrating the Year of Rooster.

We have a thousand and one kinds of paint brushes on sale in the market, and it is nothing new that those manufactured in China could contain pig bristles. Such brushes have been put on the shelves of hardware stores across this country without any problem for the past half a century. Consumers across all ethnic backgrounds have patronized the shops and bought the products without even bothering about the materials used to produce them.

Paint brushes serve a wide range of purposes. We have brushes made of sheep and pig bristles, some hard, some soft, but they all have their individual uses. To paint a wall, the soft sheep bristle brush is a primary option. Nevertheless, some professional painters prefer the more durable and firm brushes which are easier to clean, and they are almost invariably made of pig bristles.

After Berita Harian’s untimely revelation, the domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism ministry’s enforcement team started to raid hardware shops and supermarkets in Klang Valley, confiscating over 90 questionable brushes while taking the statements of employees at an unprecedented level of efficiency.

We have no idea they did this on which federal law to confiscate non-halal products sold in hardware stores and supermarkets. Are there any laws to ban non-Muslims from selling non-halal products in their shops in the first place?

The domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism ministry’s enforcement director Mohd Roslan Mahayudin said the ministry’s operation was meant to protect the rights of Muslim consumers.

The thing is, by confiscating pig bristle paint brushes, the ministry has been denying non-Muslim consumers of their rights. The domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism ministry should serve all Malaysians and not any particular ethnic community.

Muslim consumers uncomfortable with pig bristle paint brushes can always stay away from them, or be warned to use with caution by means of a non-halal label. Prohibiting the shops from selling non-halal brushes contravenes the principle of fair and free trading.

Such excessive enforcement reflects the stark reality of the country moving down the road of pan-Islamization. The emergence of various Islamic policies has not only violated the Federal Constitution but also the rights of non-Muslim citizens.

The enforcement authority’s mindless actions have opened a crack line in the country’s religious and racial sensitivity, and could potentially become the culprit that kills our hard-earned ethnic harmony.

The inundation of halal issues has erected one after another wall in the Malaysian society, segregating Muslims from non-Muslims at the expense of our invaluable inter-racial harmony.

This will dictate the future direction of the country and the government is morally obliged to look into it seriously.

And that's why we 'nons' have very right to oppose UUD 355.

Amin.

RelatedConfused Muslims again? in which Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa, chairman of the Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF) quoted a citation by scholar Ibnu Taimiyyah which said that all kinds of hair are pure, including the hair of dogs and the bristles of pigs.

Dr Farouk also pointed that religious author A. Hassan Bandung had written that the only thing that is forbidden in the Quran was consuming the flesh of swine, and not the skin or bristles.

He lamented: “It is really a sorry state of Malay Muslims that they became obsessed with such trivial issues but neglected some grand corruption scandal in front of their own eyes.”

  1. Because it is mentioned in the Torah, the Jews as at today have made Kosher certification on more than 500,000 food and commercial and industrial products. Similarly, as PM Najib said we should introduce a label system too. Problems solved.

If the Jews can do it, then why can't the Muslims? I hope to be fair can you please blog on Kosher Certification too?

I thought you hate Jews so much? Or perhap you hate the Muslims (Malays/PAS/Hadi) much much more? Wakakaka..

    1. dear Brother Hasan, I don't hate anyone (with one exception) including Jews and Muslims. I admit I do have dislikes (not hatred) for Israelis (not Jews) because of their oppression (arrogant bullying of and stealing from) of Palestinians, and for some Muslims like Jakim, Jais, Jawi, etc and some individual Muslims because of their bullying of Muslims and non-Muslims

Kosher or halal certification is okay but Consumer Ministry officers should not have confiscated paintbrushes from hardware shops as if those shops are supposed to be halal certified. They have been arrogant and illegal in interfering in non-Muslim lives.

P/S I only hated one person (Chinese) but he's no longer in this world which is why my adverse feelings towards him are in the past tense

    2. yes I think the muslim shd do it if this is what they believe is right, the question is how? perhaps the best way is to open up more n more lowyat2, bec I think it is not realistic to expect the trader to identify which of their product is halal. another way is to target the producer, manufacturer n importer to limit the scope, not trader.
