The importance of 'Virginity' to Asians

Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc) or she called herself Jehanne la Pucelle (Joan the Maid) would have been happy to read the following post, though alas, she was murdered in the mid 13th Century by burning at the stake.

Joan called herself the Maid because she wanted to stress on her status as a virgin, true and pure to and for her God. Before we get on to todays' post, here's Joan's story:

Joan of Arc Virgin

"I am Jeanne, the Maid"

Joan of Arc is one of the most renowned virgins in all of history and has frequently been called the "Virgin Warrior." For Joan remaining a virgin, or a "maid" as Joan preferred to be called, was an outward sign of her inward devotion to God.

As author Ben D. Kennedy explained in an interview about Joan of Arc: "The term Maid was very important to Saint Joan herself and she preferred to be called Joan the Maid. In the time in which she lived it signified a virgin but I think to Joan it meant much more. Her physical purity was simple an out-flowing of her spiritual purity that inspired everyone around her so to her I think the term Maid made it clear that she lived completely for God."

"I must keep the vow and promise that I have made to Our Lord, to keep well my virginity of body and of soul."

"The first time I heard the Voice I vowed to remain a virgin for as long as it pleased God."

When Joan was first visited by the "Voice" from God she pledged to remain a virgin as part of her acceptance that God had called her for a special "mission."

At the time that Joan was "called" by God she was thirteen, as she later testified at her trial, and probably had all the same hopes and dreams of the average young woman to eventually fall in love and marry. As Joan did throughout her life she surrendered her personal desire in order to fully serve God. Joan later testified at her trial that the "Voices" called her "Joan the maid, daughter of God."

Joan actually underwent examinations to prove her virginity at least twice. In medieval times people believed that a women in league with Satan could not be a virgin so proving Joan was a virgin was part of verifying that she was indeed sent by God.

As Jean d"Aulon later testified about Joan's first physical examination: "The master's report having been sent to the King, this maid was put into the hands of the Queen of Sicily [Queen Yolande], the mother of our Queen, and to certain ladies of court with her, by whom this maid was seen, visited and secretly tested and examined in the secret parts of her body. But after they had seen and looked at all that there was to look at, the lady said and related to the King, that she and her ladies found with certainty that she was a true and complete maid in whom appeared no corruption or violence."

Joan was also examined by her enemies after her capture as a way to show she was a witch as they claimed however she was again proven to be a virgin.

As Jean Massieu, one of the priests involved in Joan's trial, later testified: "I well know that she was examined to discover if she was a virgin or not by some matrons and midwives, and that on the orders of the Duchess of Bedford and notably by Anna Bavon and another matron whose name I do not remember.

After the examination they declared that she was a virgin and intact and I heard it said by Anna herself for which cause the Duchess of Bedford forbid the guards and others from offering her any violence."

Indonesian army says has stopped 'virginity tests' on female cadets

The Indonesian army has ended a controversial practice of virginity tests on women who apply to become cadets, according to its chief of staff, a move welcomed by activists who have long campaigned against it.

"Two-finger tests", where doctors check the hymen of female recruits to try to determine their virginity, was systematic, abusive and cruel, according to the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW), which conducted investigations in 2014 and 2015 into the practice and in 2017 renewed calls for it to end.

The military previously said the tests were important in determining recruits' morality. The World Health Organization has said they have "no scientific validity" and the appearance of a hymen was not a reliable indicator of intercourse.

Andika Perkasa, the Indonesian army chief of staff, told reporters on Tuesday that such tests no longer took place in the army.

"Whether the hymen was ruptured or partially ruptured was part of the examination ... now there's no more of that," he said, in comments that were confirmed by a military spokesman.

Andika last week said that the army selection process for male and female recruits must be equal.

The navy conducted pregnancy tests on women applicants, but no specific virginity tests, its spokesperson Julius Widjojono said on Wednesday, adding "both men and women undergo the same examinations".

Indan Gilang, an Air Force spokesperson, said female reproduction tests were undertaken to check for cysts or other complications that could impair recruits' ability to serve, adding that "virginity tests" did not exist in the force's terminology.

Human rights groups welcomed the announcement that the army had ceased the practice.

"There was never any need for the tests," said Andy Yentriyani, head of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan).

Andreas Harsono, Indonesia researcher at HRW said it was "the right thing to do", adding the practice was "degrading, discriminatory, and traumatic".

He said HRW had spoken to more than 100 female military recruits who underwent the tests, one of whom said she was subjected to it in 1965.

    1. Most Asian societies?

If u truly understand the human evolution then u would have said "The Dark Side of Most societies is the misogyny, the valuation of women as 2nd class" since the replacement of the matriarchy with patriarchy.

Many ancient East&West cultures had very powerful & strong matriarchal influences where polyandry was been practised!

Nowadays, misogyny happens too in most western societies, which u unashamedly praised. The west keeps them quiet & tolerate in the background.

The only difference is through the reawakening of womanpower, many modern western females r more vocal & competitive about the gender beneficial imbalances. The Asian womenfolk have a lots to catch up, though no necessarily in all the forms & fields that the western counterpart enacted.
