“The pride of M’sia”: Joe Ee praised after bagging gold at Commonwealth Games

DEBUTANT Ng Joe Ee stole the show after bagging two gold medals for Malaysia at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games last night (Aug 6).

In her maiden appearance at the Games, Joe Ee captured gold in the ball and ribbon disciplines after recording 29.700 and 27.800 points, respectively.

The 16-year-old national rhythmic gymnast’s performance and standings also captured the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“You are the pride of Keluarga Malaysia,” he tweeted as he congratulated Joe Ee.

“Among her best achievements in her maiden appearance on the Commonwealth stage,” he added.

Joe Ee’s two golds helped the national contingent achieve its six gold medal targets at the Games, held at Arena Birmingham in the UK.

According to The Star, Joe Ee had to manage without the Malaysian team’s Russian coaches, who were not allowed into the UK due to its travel ban on Russians, imposed as a result of the war in Ukraine.

She also finished fourth in the all-around event on Friday (Aug 5), which must have put a damper on her spirit.

Despite these unprecedented challenges and setbacks, she twisted and twirled her way to the top of the leaderboard and cheers from the Malaysian camp.

Joe Ee, a Form 5 student at SMK Puteri Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur, previously won a silver medal winner at the Hanoi SEA Games in May.

The Birmingham Games’ closing ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow. – Aug 7, 2022
