Shafie hints at Warisan going solo in GE15

Shafie Apdal says Warisan does not want to waste any more time thinking about political alliances.

PENAMPANG: Warisan president Shafie Apdal has hinted that the party will go solo in the next general election (GE15).

He said the party has already identified its candidates for all 25 parliamentary seats in Sabah, one seat in Labuan, and several seats in Peninsular Malaysia.

Shafie said Warisan does not want to waste any more time thinking about political alliances.

“We are ready (to face GE15). Our list of candidates is complete.

“This is not just for the parliamentary seats, but also the state seats. We have to be ready for every possibility.

“The same goes for the peninsula (no cooperation with other parties). We do not need a big tent, we only want to work with the rakyat,” he said at a press conference after Warisan’s annual general meeting.

However, Shafie said Warisan was still open to working with Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and making compromises where its candidates were concerned.

“Our list of candidates is complete, but if PBS wants to work with us, I know how to make adjustments. I know PBS’ strengths.”

Shafie has repeatedly expressed interest in working with PBS as he considers the party’s ideals to be in line with that of Warisan.

PBS president Maximus Ongkili, meanwhile, has also said the party is ready to work with any party, including Warisan, if it benefits Sabahans.

However, Ongkili has since said that PBS would continue to work with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which comprises Bersatu, STAR, SAPP and Usno.

Meanwhile, Shafie’s announcement on the party going solo comes two months after he said that Warisan was ready to work with any political coalition that wins GE15.

On June 25, the former Sabah chief minister said in a Facebook video that he would do this to ensure political stability and to safeguard the interests of the people.

“Whether (the winning coalition is) Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional or Pakatan Harapan, whoever the people choose, we must respect their decision,” he said.
