Govt led by Umno man but held hostage by its enemies, says Zaid

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s political enemies control the government, even though it is led by an Umno man, party members were reminded today ahead of a special meeting tomorrow.
Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim, who was with Umno until 2008, said there would be consequences for the party, lynchpin of Barisan Nasional, if the next general election is delayed.
“If Umno loses again, it will be buried for good and will no longer be a platform for the struggle (of the Malays),” he said in a video on his Facebook page.
The video was posted on the eve of a special address by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to party leaders and members tomorrow afternoon.
Believed to be on “current issues”, the briefing comes days after some 158 divisional leaders had called for the general election to be held immediately. It is not due until mid-September next year at the latest.
Zaid said: “Let us not be comfortable with those in Putrajaya. We have to fight for Umno’s right to survive and exist.
“We must strengthen our cooperation, the cooperation between Umno leaders who want to save the party, the fight shown by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, a son of Bagan Datuk, who has defended Umno from those who wish to see its end.”
Zaid said that Malays from rural and urban areas had risen in 1946 to defend the Malay rulers from the threat of the Malayan Union. This year, however, Umno must save itself, and Umno leaders and members must keep this in mind ahead of tomorrow.
“The government of the day may be led by Umno, but it is not a coalition government in the true sense of the word. It is an Umno-led government controlled and held up by the party’s enemies. The longer this government continues, the longer Umno’s troubles will remain,” Zaid said.
