Muhyiddin not to blame for failure to get DPM post, says Bersatu man

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu members and grassroots leaders must not blame party president Muhyiddin Yassin for failing to obtain the deputy prime minister’s post for the party, said a Bersatu leader.

Bersatu Supreme Council member Razali Idris said Muhyiddin had done his best during multiple rounds of negotiations but the appointment of a deputy prime minister was the sole prerogative of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“If the prime minister does not want to make the appointment, we must accept it,” he told FMT.

“The Bersatu Supreme Council and party members must not direct their anger at Muhyiddin because he has done all he could.”

In a recent interview with reporters to commemorate his one year in office, Ismail ruled out the need for a deputy prime minister, saying he already had the backing of four senior ministers in the Cabinet.

The appointment of senior ministers was first made by Muhyiddin when he became prime minister in 2020, and emulated by Ismail when he took over in August last year.

Ismail has been under pressure from Perikatan Nasional (PN) to appoint a deputy, with the coalition saying the position was included in an agreement it made with him before he was appointed to the top post.

The agreement called for a deputy prime minister to be appointed from Bersatu, the coalition said in July.

Nonetheless, Razali said discussions between PN and Ismail must continue as there remained several unresolved issues between the coalition and the prime minister.

“Just because the prime minister does not see a need to appoint a deputy, it does not mean further meetings with PN should stop,” he said.

“A meeting must be held immediately to discuss other matters.”

A delegation of PN leaders was supposed to meet the prime minister earlier this month but this was apparently cancelled at the last minute by Ismail.

On Thursday, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the coalition had sent an official letter to ask for a new date to meet the prime minister.

  1. Moo declined to name any DPM when He was the PM, so...he should not complain now...

  2. Bersatu should focus on the fact that this not appointing a DPM for Bersatu as was agreed reflects turtle egg's and UMNO's lack of respect towards Bersatu itself.
