KUALA LUMPUR – Local bread maker Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd will be raising the prices of its products starting September 1.

The latest price hikes, which mark the second increase in less than a year, were attributed to inflation impacting raw materials.

This will see the prices of the Gardenia Original Classic bread be raised by 20 sen to RM3, while the Gardenia Original Classic jumbo bread will cost 30 sen more at RM4.30.

Gardenia Double Choc Muffins will cost RM2.20 per packet, while its Choc-a-Lot Twiggies will cost RM2.00 per packet.

According to a memo distributed to retailers, Gardenia had listed 53 products that were affected by the price hikes.

“We have done our best to maintain the previous selling price, but due to the hike in prices of raw materials such as wheat flour and vegetable fat that are constantly increasing, it is only necessary for us to revise the prices (of our products),” Gardenia Bakeries chief executive Koh Chin Huat said in a statement.

“We will always be committed to maintaining the quality of our products at an optimal level to satisfy all our customers and users.”

Gardenia’s letter to retailers was shared on social media recently, with some netizens seeking clarification on the price hikes.

In response, Gardenia told a Facebook profile named Sisitivi Rosak that the company had been absorbing the hikes in costs of raw materials in recent years.

“We would like to assure you that repricing our products is always a last resort after making every effort and using various means to achieve efficiency and productivity,” the company said.

“Given the circumstances, we have no other option but to revise the prices on the affected products.” – The Vibes, August 28, 2022

  1. Was it Marie Antoinette who said, "let them eat cake" when told the peasants had no bread to eat?

We all know that she literally lost her head.

Would somebody lose his/her head in modern Malaysia for the high cost of living?

The consolation for the rakyat is that with the election now almost certainly to be held this year, more goodies will come their way. This should mitigate the high cost of living somewhat but the relief will still be temporary.
