BN to go solo in GE15 - Mat Hasan

BN to go solo in GE15 - Mat Hasan

Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) is steadfast in going alone and would not be tied with any other parties in the 15th general election, said Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

He said this was because the government which would be formed after GE15 must be the government which garners the biggest majority which would ensure political stability, apart from holding to the resolutions of 2020 Umno Annual General Assembly in not cooperating with other parties.

“It is clear that Umno is taking the path to go alone (in GE15) and would not be tied with any parties, we do not want any alliance which could be binding but whatever negotiations or alliance would be after GE15.

“If the party is unable, then it would be appropriate to think of tying with other parties as partners to build a strong government, and these were among the proposals raised in the Rembau Umno division delegates meeting,” he told reporters in Seremban today.

Asked if the question of the position of the prime minister was discussed in the meeting, Mohamad, who is also Rantau assemblyperson, said there were no motions on the position of PM raised apart from putting the matter to the party’s top leadership.

“There were no discussions, no question of supporting or not supporting the PM, we adhere to the decision of the Supreme Council, we have given the mandate to five top party leaders but it is up to the respective divisions (on PM’s position), we did not give any guidelines,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said whether the party elections are held before or after GE15 would be decided after discussions with members of the Supreme Council.

Penang Umno also voiced the same sentiment and expressed support for party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Penang Umno Liaison Committee chairperson Musa Sheikh Fadzir said the two leaders were important in strengthening the government and the party.

Selangor and Penang Umno also both expressed their readiness to work with PAS through Muafakat Nasional (MN) in GE15.

In Kedah, state Umno Liaison Committee chairperson Jamil Khir Baharom said it wanted to give the PM the opportunity and space to revive the country’s social, political and economic status.

Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid, who is also Padang Terap Umno chief, said the division had approved a motion to make Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob the “poster boy” for the party and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next general election.

In Johor, the state Umno Liaison Committee chairperson,Hasni Mohammad, said the party’s state chapter also gave full support to Ismail Sabri's leadership but it did not need to be translated into motions or votes.

"... the PM is from Umno and Umno is a party that is over 70 years old which has matured," he said when opening the Pontian division delegates meeting.

Vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is also Pasir Gudang Umno chief, said the division fully supported Ismail Sabri's leadership but proposed that Parliament be dissolved immediately.

He said the division also supported the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the federal government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) on Sept 13.

Meanwhile, in Kelantan, Machang Umno unanimously passed a motion to nominate Ismail Sabri as prime minister if BN wins GE15, said its chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub.

In Malacca, Masjid Tanah Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh said the division did not specifically bring a motion of support for the PM but in principle, the delegates supported Ismail Sabri's leadership.

This is following Ismail Sabri's excellent performance in administering the government, he said.

In Negeri Sembilan, deputy president Mohamad said there were no motions on the position of the PM raised at the Rembau Umno division delegates meeting apart from putting the matter to the party top leadership.

In Perak, state party chairperson Saarani Mohamad said Perak Umno was of the view that the general election should not be held too early or too late as the government currently needed to manage the Covid-19 crisis.

Meanwhile, the delegates’ meetings nationwide also discussed motions to postpone party elections until after GE15 as well as no cooperation with Bersatu and proposed that the federal government expedite the tabling of the anti-party hopping law.
