Public gathers RM5,200 in donations within 12 hours

KUALA LUMPUR – Members of the public have successfully helped raise RM5,200 in donations for Lai Yuet Ming to pay her fine in court.
The 65-year-old was recently fined RM10,000 for making insulting and offensive statements against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in the MalaysiaFlipFlop blog.
The media report caught Twitter user @lqtodabal’s attention, prompting him to tweet about contributing to her fine.
He tweeted “...can I derma to her fine?” with a screenshot of the news article on her fine, which sparked more tweets of support from other users.
@lqtodabal then followed up with another post the next day explaining that he had reached out to her and got her bank account number for anyone who wishes to contribute.
“Aight since this got attention, I reached out to the lady and got her bank deets for anyone who wants to contribute directly,” he said while adding her bank account number in the post.
The tweet garnered over 2,000 retweets and likes from the public.
About 12 hours later, @lqtodabal tweeted a screenshot of his message with Lai Yuet Ming’s lawyer, Rajsurian Pillai, stating that she received RM5,200 in her bank account.
“As of a few minutes ago, we’ve raised RM5,200 for her!”, he said.
The single mother was charged under Section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the offence against the former prime minister.
She was first fined RM4,000, in default three months’ jail with a charge of intentionally making offensive and malicious communications against Muhyiddin through the MalaysiaFlipFlop blog on March 23, last year.
Additionally, she was fined RM6,000, in default six months’ jail, on the second count of intentionally making statements against the Agong. This offence was committed on the same blog on March 21, last year.
The charge was framed under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code for making a statement conducing to public mischief, which carries an imprisonment for up to two years, a fine or both, if convicted. – The Vibes, December 23, 2021
