PETALING JAYA: Parti Sarawak Bersatu president Wong Soon Koh has confirmed that he will be contesting in the Sibu parliamentary seat at the next general election.
The seat was won by Oscar Ling of DAP with a majority of 11,422 votes in a four-cornered contest in 2018.
Wong, who is also the assemblyman for Bawang Assan, said his decision was made to meet party members’ desire for their party president to contest the seat.
“I have no other choice than to lead PSB’s fight for the seat although I am quite old for that,” said Wong, who is 80, according to Harian Metro.
He also said that PSB might not contest in Lanang to give way to a candidate from Parti Bumi Kenyalang. The seat is currently held by DAP’s Alice Lau.
PSB deputy president Johnical Rayong Ngipa said that Wong’s candidacy received unanimous support from the party’s supreme council.
He said Wong is the party’s confirmed candidate for Sibu.
PSB made its debut in the 12th Sarawak state elections that took place last December and won four seats.
However, it lost one when Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How announced his exit from the party last month and became an independent assemblyman.
