KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed the aspirations of PAS to be a kingmaker at the coming general election. He said it was merely an attempt to be rewarded for backing the next government.

Anwar advised PAS to focus instead on putting forth clear policies on governing the country. He said the party’s kingmaker approach was “a dangerous approach because there will be threats”.

He told reporters: “Being a kingmaker might mean they (PAS) want certain ministerial posts or positions, like what is happening now.”

PAS, a member of Perikatan Nasional, is part of the coalition government of Ismail Sabri Yaakob and its MPs hold several ministerial positions.

The party’s ambition of being a kingmaker was raised by PAS election director Sanusi Md Nor who said the party was confident it could win 40 of 80 proposed electoral contests, which would make PAS a kingmaker.

Last week, an aide to Ismail revealed that the prime minister had pledged to retain the appointments of Perikatan Nasional members in statutory bodies and government-linked companies.

Ismail’s special officer, Kamarul Zaman Yusoff, said this was contained in Ismail’s agreement with his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin.
