Umno election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman says the mandate from delegates was to support PN until a general election is called.
PETALING JAYA: Amid speculation of an Umno pullout from the Perikatan Nasional government, a senior Umno official contends that any decision to withdraw support from PN can only be made after Parliament is dissolved,
Umno election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said delegates at the last Umno general assembly had given the party’s Supreme Council the mandate to decide.
“But that did not mean the council could do as it pleased,” he told FMT.
“No date was set at the AGM. We only agreed to continue supporting the current government and remain in it until Parliament is dissolved and an election is called.”
Tajuddin said he was of the opinion that according to the resolution made, the delegates wanted the Supreme Council to base their action on “current events”.
“I feel that Parliament should be dissolved first, then we withdraw support from PN. Only then can the Supreme Council call the shots.”
Yesterday, Umno leaders Shahidan Kassim and Annuar Musa – both rumoured to be Bersatu-friendly – said the Supreme Council could not go against the AGM’s decision.
Shahidan said the AGM’s decision could only be amended at the next assembly, while Annuar said any attempt to go against the resolution could result in the intervention of the Registrar of Societies.
Recently, it was reported that Zahid, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan and party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan had summoned more than 10 MPs for a meeting.
According to Utusan Malaysia, Zahid and Mohamad plan to submit a motion to the Supreme Council for Umno to retract its support for the government “in the near future”.
On Friday, FMT reported the majority of Umno’s Supreme Council members agreed to withdraw support for the PN government before Aug 1.
Meanwhile, a member who spoke on the condition of anonymity said Zahid and the council would consider the current state of the nation and the grouses of the people when deciding on retracting support for PN.
The source also said the party’s constitution gave them the right to decide “when no AGM is held”.
“So, whatever the Supreme Council decides (in matters of retracting support for PN) is correct.”
The source said the Supreme Council had previously ignored resolutions made at the AGM based on a current situation that had impacted the party.
This included the time the council postponed the party elections for 18 months after the RoS had barred Umno from holding elections physically.
“The postponement was against the demands made at the AGM,” he said.
“The council was forced to postpone the polls in line with the party constitution which stipulated that the council had the right to make a decision when no AGMs were held.”
