Najib: PN failed to buy over more ’frogs'

“Backdoor” Emergency revocation proves Gov’t has failed, Najib says

FORMER Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak opined that the Government’s decision to revoke the Emergency Ordinances (EO) quietly proved that it had failed to contain the COVID-19 crisis.

“It proves that the Emergency was unnecessary at all. This will erode investors’ confidence and show everyone it was just all a political game,” he said, in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan shocked MPs when he told the Dewan Rakyat that Putrajaya had cancelled all EO that were enacted this year, on July 21 during a Cabinet meeting.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s Facebook post

“The Government has decided, based on Article 150(3) (of the Federal Constitution), to cancel all emergency ordinances (formulated) during the proclamation of emergency.

“Hence, (the laws have been) revoked. Therefore, the issue of annulment (of the laws) is no longer relevant,” Malaysiakini reported him as saying.

But as of now, no new gazette has been issued on the Attorney-General’s Chambers website on the annulment of EO.

Several legal experts have questioned the legality of the Government annulling the EO in such manner, with lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri saying that Perikatan Nasional had removed itself from power under Section 11 of the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021.

On that note, Najib argued that by backdating the revocation, the Government was also indirectly admitting to have lost majority at the Dewan Rakyat.

“It looks like they failed to buy over more ’frogs’. I believe the ‘frogs’ already in the team are now mulling on how to ditch the sinking ship before their decision comes back to bite them.

“No one ever said that a ‘frog’ can only leap once,” the Pekan MP remarked. – July 27, 2021.
