“Senior cop in fatal collision case must be held fully accountable”

MCA Youth has called for the senior police officer involved in a recent fatal collision that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old student to be held fully accountable for his actions, saying there must be no leniency in his sentence.
Citing testimonies by several witnesses, its national deputy chairman Mike Chong Yew Chuan said Deputy Superintendent Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak declaring that he is a police officer to bystanders after the collision that killed Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie was a clear abuse of power.
“Instead of taking immediate action to help, he used his authority to instruct bystanders to assist in moving the victim’s body while continuing to act with hostility rather than urgency,” he said.
“His behaviour raises serious concerns about integrity and priorities. Adding to that, some witnesses claimed that the officer suggested taking the victim to a police station, rather than seeking immediate medical attention at a hospital.”
Chong went on to suggest that the police force undergo a thorough screening or a possible assessment to gauge their wellbeing.
“Some may argue that the victim provoked the officer by revving his engine next to the car, but this does not excuse the reckless speed that followed, nor the officer’s failure to slow down for several speed bumps and a junction – all of which allegedly contributed to the fatal crash,” he stated.
“We cannot afford loss of temperament and clouding of judgement while they have a duty to uphold the justice of our nation.
“We must be able to trust the police, as they are meant to ensure our safety. Police officers are not above the law, and it is imperative that strict action is taken to hold those who abuse their power to account.”
