Backlash continues over Anwar’s appointment of Thaksin as Asean adviser
PAS Pahang has raised concerns over Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s decision to appoint former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as a personal adviser for Malaysia’s ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship.
The party questioned Thaksin’s controversial past, including allegations of corruption and human rights violations, deeming him unsuitable for the role.
They urged the government to prioritise addressing domestic issues and suggested local or regional experts instead. PAS Pahang also called for clarity on the selection criteria and the benefits of this decision to Malaysia.
PAS Pahang information chief Aireroshairi Roslan stated that the move raises serious questions about the priorities and integrity of national leadership.
“We urge the government to reconsider this decision and focus on addressing more pressing domestic issues. Malaysia needs transparent and credible leadership, not one entangled in controversy and scandal,” he said in a statement.
Aireroshairi noted that the appointment was both surprising and raised doubts about the country’s credibility in making decisions that reflect Malaysia’s reputation on the global stage.
He pointed out that Thaksin’s controversial record, including allegations of abuse of power and corruption, raises questions about his suitability for the role.
“Thaksin has been involved in the Tak Bai massacre and anti-drug operations in Thailand, which claimed thousands of lives without fair judicial processes. Is this the type of leadership Malaysia should look up to?” he asked.
Aireroshairi further stated that appointing a controversial foreign advisor reflects a lack of clarity in the current administration’s governance.
Many opposition leaders, including Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad noted that other candidates than Thaksin who are without legal controversies could have been chosen.
Dr Mahathir refrained from extensive commentary, noting that the decision rests with Anwar. The appointment, announced by Anwar, aims to leverage Thaksin’s expertise on regional issues. — Dec 25, 2024

Anwar Ibrahim went hobnobbing with Hamas terrorist leaders, none of the Malaysian transparency champions complained.
ReplyDeleteThaksin is hardly the worst overseas figure that Anwar Ibrahim associates with.
