Summary
- PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang accuses Malaysiakini of being a "paid media outlet".
- He previously urged Muslims working for Malaysiakini to resign and warned against the influence of media and "mercenaries" he claimed were being used to spread misinformation and immoral values.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has accused Malaysiakini of being a “mercenary” in a lengthy article titled “The Struggle to Marginalise Islam”.
“We have witnessed the collapse of the iron curtain in Eastern Bloc nations, where Islamophobia no longer exists. At the same time, Islam has broken through the barriers of Islamophobia in the Western Bloc.
“Although there are paid media outlets in Malaysia, such as Malaysiakini and its affiliates, acting as mercenaries attempting to cover up subtly, their true nature remains exposed,” he stated in his Minda Presiden PAS (President's Thoughts) column shared on his Facebook today.
However, Hadi did not specify who he claimed is funding Malaysiakini. For the record, the news portal’s income is derived from reader subscriptions and advertisements.
Not the first time
This is not the first time Hadi has targeted the news portal.
The PAS president previously described Malaysiakini as a platform that “publishes news and writings that portray Islam in a negative light”.
At the time, Hadi accused Malaysiakini of “encouraging immorality and promoting wrongdoing”.
“Providing reports for apostates and such groups.
“I advise Muslim employees working with them to resign,” he said in a column published on Harakahdaily on May 19, 2023.
Hadi had also warned Muslims to be vigilant in this era, citing the presence of devils who use media, mercenaries, and volunteers to spread compelling information and writings.
