Najib must file new application with the pardons board
FORMER prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak must file a new application with the Pardons Board, chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, to seek house arrest for the remainder of his sentence.
Under Article 42(1) of the Federal Constitution, the King can grant pardons, reprieves, or postponements for offences in Federal Territories.
Additionally, Article 42(2) allows the King to remit, suspend, or reduce court-imposed sentences, according to news portal Sinar Harian.
In October, Najib issued an apology for the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) losses. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim then welcomed the apology issued over the 1MDB scandal.
“I welcome it (terima baik),” he told reporters after Friday (Dec 27) prayers when asked to comment.
Anwar also confirmed to Parliament that he submitted Najib’s royal addendum for review by the Pardons Board. Factors such as behaviour and contributions will influence the decision. The High Court previously rejected Najib’s judicial review application, prompting him to appeal. — Dec 28, 2024
