US baldly backs a judicial coup in Romania
US State Department applauds court cancellation of right-wing, pro-peace candidate’s election victory on spurious grounds

America has just endorsed a judicial coup in Romania. This is unlike anything we’ve seen in the era of Color Revolutions, i.e. the post-Cold War era, because Romania is a NATO and EU member state, a democracy in good standing and a loyal follower of NATO opinion, from the Global War on Terror to Covid to the war in Ukraine.
But suddenly it has experienced a remarkable takeover at the level of transnational elites. Romania held presidential elections on November 24, but the wrong candidate won, with every prospect of winning the inevitable runoff: Calin Georgescu, a pro-Trump and Trump-like populist who wants peace in Ukraine and a return to faith and patriotism in Romania.
On December 1, legislative elections followed and the nationalist parties made impressive gains, winning about a third of the votes. Nevertheless, the governing Social Democrats, the dominant party in Romania since 1989, came in first and is likely to form a new government coalition. Then, on December 6, just before completing the ceremony of democracy on December 8 by electing a president, the coup came and the elections were canceled.
Surprisingly, the coup was launched from the Constitutional Court of Romania, an institution without much power in elections. The court declared that there would not be elections on December 8 and then added that there hadn’t been elections on November 24 either. The December 1 elections were declared to be just fine, however—apparently, so long as the wrong guys don’t win, it’s okay to have elections.
Democracy past and present was suddenly suspended without argument or evidence, and, of course, without any authority, simply by alleging dark deeds of foreign influence—gesturing toward Russia, but perhaps also China, since the blame is to fall on TikTok for mis/dis/mal-information. Yet voting doesn’t depend on a bunch of judges. That would be oligarchy.
While Trump was in Paris and Biden, I suppose, in limbo, the State Department backed the elite coup against democracy in Bucharest. First, on December 1, the State Department issued a congratulation in Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s name—it’s Independence Day in Romania.
Blinken approves of the way Romania obediently follows Washington’s lead on the disastrous Ukraine war, which is much more dangerous for Romanians than liberal elites in America. No electoral drama at this point.
Then, on December 4, the State Department issued a statement warning of foreign influence in Romanian elections and the dangers to Romania’s Western progress. This explicitly echoed the Romanian deep state’s (CSAT, Supreme Council for National Defense) dark allegations, without evidence or precedent, casting suspicion on the elections. Again, very importantly—only the presidential election was declared to be suspicious; no allegations that the later legislative elections had also been corrupted by Russia.
Finally, on December 6, after the Constitutional Court acted on the excuse provided by the deep state, another State Department statement briefly congratulated Romanian elites for the coup, citing “malign foreign influence!”
The speed of the reactions and the near simultaneity of Washington’s declarations following actions in Bucharest on December 4 and 6 suggest the possibility of a coordinated coup. But it’s also just a flunky in the State Department, a spokesman posting about very grave matters on X.
The EU seems to be following suit, though it’s not yet clear how involved in the coup any European power is. Ursula von der Leyen posted on X her approval and support, citing a call with the outgoing Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who has decided that he will not be going out when his term expires.
(The Constitutional Court immediately reacted by backing this further outrage against the constitutional order.) That’s a public statement by the highest EU official, but citing worries about “foreign influence” isn’t quite official EU policy.
So there’s a remarkable vagueness about decisive public action attacking democracy. The Party of European Socialists is so far the only EU organization to congratulate Romania on the coup. Since it makes up a third of the European Commission and a sixth of the European Parliament and European Council, it’s quite important. But it’s also just a Facebook post.
Lesser powers have taken the same attitude through congratulations on X without issuing official statements. That includes Polish Foreign Affairs Minister Radek Sikorski, representing the most bellicose country in Europe.
So also Italian Vice-Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Tejani, speaking for the current presidency in the G7. A spokesperson for the French Embassy in Bucharest did likewise.
The diplomatic silence about a judicial coup is a greater shock still. The absence of statements from heads of government or heads of state shows a certain reluctance to condemn the overthrow of democracy in what is supposedly a fellow NATO and EU member state.

Hence the informality of using social media, the bureaucratic language deferring to the EU Digital Security Act and the rote reference to Russian interference in addressing the coup.
Outright coups are a surprise in the EU. Usually, there are other mechanisms to overthrow governments, force a redo of elections, or corrupt the democratic process in order to impose the EU Constitution as the Treaty of Lisbon.
Italy, Ireland and Greece have all been through it in the 21st century and now apparently it’s Romania’s turn. It is rather more crass this time around, but American and European power is weakening and elites are losing control—so they grow desperate and do desperate things. Reality is dawning on us all, without any promise of relief.
Meanwhile, populism is rising. NATO’s eastern flank is turning against the disastrous Ukraine war. Viktor Orban in Hungary and Robert Fico in Slovakia are both pro-peace. Romania would have added to that gathering chorus.
Austria might do the same now that elections produced a turn to the right. Germany might be next at federal elections due in 2025. And the bellicose English and French governments have been crippled by domestic crises and populist uprisings. We should all prepare for a dangerous decade to come.

BREAKING: The EU is making every possible effort to stop Georgescu from winning the next Romanian election after annulling the previous one.
- Georgescu has had his heating and internet to his house cut off.
- They’re planning to ban TikTok and put heavy restrictions on the X platform.
- They’ve stopped broadcasting Realitatea Plus TV - the only major channel criticizing the decision to cancel the presidential elections.
The world is silent on the EU’s interference with Romania’s democracy.
Leftie Wankers and MAGA idiots ( I don't which is worse) deny people the Agency to decide their political process... Romanians, Ukrainians, yes, Syrians want their freedom.
ReplyDeleteLeftie Wankers and MAGA idiots only know how to allege Wankee interference behind every bush.
Wakakakaka…

ReplyDelete🇨🇳 CHINA’S “LASER DIAMOND CONSTELLATION” SATELLITES: A BIG LEAP IN SPACE TECH
China launched five “laser diamond constellation test” satellites on Dec. 12 aboard a Long March 2D rocket, showcasing its ambitious push for inter-satellite laser communication.
Why does this matter?
These lasers enable satellites to communicate directly, bypassing China’s limited global ground stations—a key step in building its Guowang and Qianfan megaconstellations, aimed at revolutionizing low-Earth orbit connectivity.
This was China’s 63rd launch of 2024, edging closer to last year’s record of 67.
Next, a Long March 5B rocket launches Dec. 16 with Guowang satellites.

ReplyDeleteThe Left’s identity has revolved around January 6th and ‘Russian collusion’.
They justified all their vitriol against Trump and his supporters, because the MSM claimed Trump was a Russian asset and insurrectionist.
Their hatred is based on lies that they created.
TREASON!

ReplyDeleteSurprised that the US took out Xinjiang separatist groups from the list of terrorist groups ? It is not a coincidence pompeo took that initiative as China is next on the list for the fight for western supremacy.
The US wanted to create the same chaos in China as it did in Syria.
One can understand now why China took appropriate measures to tackle radicalism by fighting the root of the problem > ignorance and poverty.

ReplyDeleteUyghur jihadists in Syria just got a big boost.
Now, with the a lot of support from Turkey and the CIA, these clowns will try to cause trouble in China.
And the US media, NGOs etc. will portray them as victims and freedom fighters.
The Americans have already had laser-based satellite to satellite communications for more than 15 years.

Yr know-nothing yankee laser-based satellite to satellite communication !!!

🇪🇺🇹🇩 Romania, the first country to fall into total NATO dictatorship after an anti-war candidate won an election.
Mass arrests and persecution of supporters of the leading Presidential candidate, Călin Georgescu across the country after a Romanian court decided to annul the election because the winning candidate was anti-war in Ukraine.
Now his supporters are being arrested en masse and an attempt is being made to break his camp which ran his TikTok campaign.
This aggressive behavior towards the anti-war candidates shows that NATO is preparing Romania for a new front in Europe. Moldova will attack Transnistria and Romania will be drawn into the war.
