Summary

  • Umno leader Mohd Puad Zarkashi questions PAS leaders’ sincerity in raising the issue of a purported royal addendum concerning Najib Abdul Razak’s house arrest.

  • Puad says he is only certain of Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Aziz’s sincerity on the issue, as the latter called for Najib’s full release.

An Umno supreme council member has questioned the sincerity of PAS leaders who raised the issue of the purported royal addendum for former premier Najib Abdul Razak to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.

Mohd Puad Zarkashi expressed confidence in the sincerity of only one PAS leader - Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Aziz - as he said the senator had shown good faith in defending Najib when he called for the former Umno president to be freed.

“I thank Nik Abduh for being forthright. He suggested that Najib be fully released, not subjected to house arrest.

“We’re unsure if other PAS leaders are sincere when they make such a fuss over the addendum. Some even appeared in court to make a show of it,” he said on Facebook today.

Puad added that he was praying for Nik Abduh, who is the son of former PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, to remain in the Islamist party’s top leadership for a long time.

“The party has a tendency to label people. Those labelled as ‘off-track’ are quickly sidelined,” he said.

Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Aziz

Yesterday, Nik Abduh shared his opinion on what should happen to the convicted former premier.

“I do not suggest that he be given house arrest. His right is full freedom,” said the former Bachok MP on Facebook.

“My view is that, just as the country’s politics continues to act like it is mature, is the judiciary also full of acting?” he added.

Previously, Najib’s son Mohd Nizar and several Umno politicians claimed that the house arrest addendum, allegedly issued by the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is real.

However, the High Court had ruled the politicians’ affidavits as hearsay, which led to Najib filing an appeal at the appellate court.

‘Acting at the highest levels’

Meanwhile, Puad urged Nik Abduh to clarify what he meant by “acting mature”.

“What does Nik Abduh mean by this? Does it refer to those who ‘pretend to be wise but are actually insincere’?

“That is why Najib’s challenge now isn’t just the failure to receive a fair trial but also the ‘acting mature’ at the highest levels.

“According to Nik Abduh, even the courts are acting,” he added.
