Non-Muslims up in arms over MBSA banning open selling of pork-related food at pasar malam

AS Malaysia thrives on its religious diversity – and food being the country’s melting pot of unity – who can blame non-Muslim for feeling that their rights are under siege by the action of the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) to bar pasar malam traders/hawkers from selling pork-related delicacies?

The ruling came about following a viral video by TikToker Indah Nur who shared that there was a stall at the Setia Alam pasar malam in Shah Alam ‘openly’ selling pork-based food items.

Following such revelation, Malay language daily Sinar Harian quoted MBSA corporate and public relations head Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif as saying that selling pork or pork-based food items is prohibited in open areas under its jurisdiction.

This has sent human rights activists and lawyer Siti Kassim up the wall as she accused the government/authorities of dictating to multi-religious Malaysians how to live their lives.

“And they say nooo [sic] … it won’t affect the non-Muslims. … yeah right … funny thing is, it’s all these mo**ns in the government telling us how to live. Tell them to go and fly kite people … ” she berated in a Facebook post.

And they say nooo.... it won't affects the non-Muslims..... yeah right... funny thing is, it's all these mo**ns in the government telling us how to live. Tell them to go and fly kite people... 🙄

This is when the fan base of the Orang Asli advocate chipped in with their inputs. One commenter whole-heartedly concurred with Siti Kasim that “non-Muslims are finding it harder to just lead a normal life” with another contending that “Muslims, too, aren’t having it easy as they’ve to pursue a very restricted life”.

One learned commenter was fascinated as to how city/municipal councils are capable of “mimicking the Syariah law which supposedly only applies to Muslims to be applicable to non-Muslims as well”.

A few commenters harped on what would be the reaction of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim be like especially after “he has dined in a Chinese restaurant with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia”.

This is when one netizen insinuated that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman “needs a good big piece of mirror at home” while another revealed that “while Saudi Arabia is becoming more moderate as a Muslim country, Malaysia is getting more Islamic and stricter”.

While this netizen has every faith in the open-minded Agong to save the day, another justified that PMX’s hands are tight for his intervention can mean “losing Malay votes”.

One commenter struck the chord by pointing out that MBSA should also barred the selling of food items containing beef given “Hindu, Sikhs and Buddhists don’t consume beef” with another reckoning such is fat chance as “fairness doesn’t thrive in Bolehland”.

As one commenter lamented that non-Muslims “are getting more and more oppressed in this country with PMX just turning a deaf ear”, another reminded the latter that “Little Napoleons are screwing up his Madani initiative”.

“He should take note and take immediate action. If not, his position will be in jeopardy come the next GE (general election”. – Dec 12, 2024

  1. Indonesia seems to have no such problems... "Babi Guling" , "Sate Babi" , "Roti Babi" all sold in the open streetside.
