PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Tengku Zafrul Aziz has acknowledged having discussions with PKR to join the party, but says he has yet to decide on the matter.

The discussions did not centre on positions at state level, or about by-elections, he said in a statement tonight, after speculation that his move to PKR would result in him becoming menteri besar of Selangor.

Tengku Zafrul, a senator whose term expires soon, would have to stand for election as a state assemblyman in order to hold a state position.

He expressed surprise at statements made by Umno leaders recently about his position, but stood by the right of a person to choose a path of political struggle “because without compatibility it is impossible for an individual to provide the best service (to the people)”.

Yesterday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had criticised those who put personal interest ahead of party loyalty. Zahid also said Tengku Zafrul has not informed him of any plans to leave the party.

Tengku Zafrul said tonight he had not received any call from the Umno leadership “to ask about the real issue”, and added that he would officially inform the party leadership of any decision he makes.

He criticised the unhealthy politics which included behind-the-scenes attacks and “agendas of the scoundrels” in Selangor Umno. Tengku Zafrul was treasurer of Selangor Umno until he quit in April.

In response to Umno’s comments about rethinking its alliance with partners in the unity government, Tengku Zafrul said he was confident about the spirit of cooperation and tolerance in “the big tent of the unity government”.

He said he believed in a government that is able to accept differences of views and opinions among component parties, without interfering with the main objective of steering the country towards the best welfare for the people.
