PETALING JAYA: It may take up to six months to repair a section of the road to Murum Dam in Sarawak’s Belaga district that collapsed after heavy rainfall last night.
Around 90% of the road at Km13 of the Pan Borneo Highway feeder road collapsed.
The Sarawak public works department (JKR) said an alternative road, cutting across a palm oil plantation, had been opened up.
The head of the Pan Borneo Highway Unit at Sarawak JKR, Fadillah Redzuan, said the agency would have to conduct a study before coming up with a design to replace the damaged section, which is about 300km from Bintulu.
“The design has to take into account the water flow condition (in the area),” said Fadillah.
“After that, we will decide on a design and construct the damaged section of the road. Depending on the complexity of the work, construction is expected to take six months.”
Sarawak PKR information chief Abun Sui Anyit said that up to 10 longhouses and two schools in Metalun and Tegulang, in the interior of Belaga, would be affected by the damaged road.
According to a Dayak Daily report, among the populated settlements affected by the road collapse in Metalun are Long Peran, Long Menapa, Long Luar, Long Tangau, Long Singu and SK Matalun.
The villages or longhouses affected in Teluang include Long Wat, Long Malim Penan, Long Malim Kenyah, Long Magan, Long Lawen and SK Tegulang.
