Harapan presidential council gives nod to Muda pact

Pakatan Harapan is set to cooperate with Muda for the 15th general election, said coalition chairperson Anwar Ibrahim today.

However, he said Harapan’s presidential council decided that it would be in the form of an electoral pact, instead of accepting Muda as a component party.

This is because, to be a component of the coalition, such a move would need to be approved by the Registrar of Societies (RoS), he said.

“A decision was made earlier. The decision was to continue (with the cooperation).

“As of now it is an electoral pact, as (an) official member, it needs (the involvement of the) RoS.

“I don’t think the RoS will approve anything now,” he told reporters today.

Anwar (above) said they will be discussing details of their cooperation, such as seat allocations and logo.

Muda initially applied to be a component party in the coalition. Harapan then formed a committee to handle negotiations with the youth-based party.

The committee was to negotiate with PSM as well, which applied to form an electoral pact with Harapan.

Today’s decision on Harapan-Muda cooperation comes after resistance from certain factions in the coalition, particularly by the youth wings of its component parties.

  1. Anwar is willing to risk revolt by the youth divisions to accomodate MUDA?
