Azmin's speech shows he's bored, out of issues - Amirudin
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari today said a phone call he had with his predecessor Azmin Ali about contesting the Gombak parliamentary seat was merely “small talk”.
Speaking to reporters, he said the conversation should not be taken seriously as he contacts Azmin occasionally in a profesional capacity between menteri besar and cabinet minister.
He said Azmin (above, left), who was the menteri besar from 2014 to 2018, is still the Selangor Development Action Council chairperson.
“Some matters would require me being in contact with him, such as administration issues because he is the council chairperson.
“And at some point, when there is no time to call for a (physical) meeting, I would contact him via Whatsapp or even call him on the phone, if the need arises.
“We engaged as professionals but, during the start of conversation, there would be some small talk,” Amirudin (above, right) said, as quoted by Berita Harian.
This comes after Azmin, a Bersatu supreme council member and the incumbent Gombak MP, commented about the phone call during a ceramah recently.
The senior minister (International Trade and Industry) alleged that Amirudin told him PKR sending the menteri besar to contest in Gombak was a move to kill the latter’s political career.
However, Amirudin said Azmin was taking the small talk too “seriously”.
“If he wants to take it seriously, then it shows that he (Azmin) has run out of issues to raise. If he wants to take everything seriously, then it’s okay, I know he is bored,” Amirudin said.
The Sungai Tua state assemblyperson reportedly said this during a press conference in Klang, Selangor when asked to comment on the allegation.
I told him, ‘silakan’
Recently, a video clip went viral on social media showing Azmin talking about Amirudin saying he was asked by PKR to contest the Gombak parliamentary seat.
“Last month, he (Amirudin) called me. He said ‘I was told to contest in Gombak’. So I told him, ‘silakan’ (be my guest),” Azmin said.
“And then he said, ‘I know this is to kill my political career.’”
Azmin is a former PKR deputy president who left the party during the Sheraton Move political coup in 2020.
He subsequently joined Bersatu and became a senior minister (Economics and Financial) under then prime minister and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
He has held the Gombak parliamentary seat for three consecutive terms since 2008. All three times, Azmin won the seat on a PKR ticket. He is also the Bukit Antarabangsa state assemblyperson.
