Umno to contest in Kuantan, says MCA leader

Ti Lian Ker said he was offered the Indera Mahkota seat but has rejected it to help MCA candidates in Pahang.

KUANTAN: The Kuantan parliamentary seat will be contested by Umno in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15) while MCA has been given the Raub, Bentong and Indera Mahkota constituencies, according to party vice-president Ti Lian Ker.

A China Press report quoting Ti, who is also deputy youth and sports minister, said that initial discussions indicated that MCA was to contest in Kuantan.

“However, it was finally decided that Umno should contest in Kuantan while MCA has been given three other parliamentary seats in the state.

“Initially, Barisan Nasional planned to let MCA contest only in Bentong, but after some discussions, it was agreed that we get three seats in Pahang,” he said in a media statement, as reported by China Press.

MCA and Umno contested the Kuantan seat in the last two general elections in 2013 and 2018. They lost on both occasions to PKR’s Fuziah Salleh.

In 2008, MCA lost the seat, also to Fuziah, after winning it in the 2004 election.

On his position, Ti said that he had rejected the offer to contest the Indera Mahkota seat.

“However, I will be helping the MCA division chairman Quek Tai Seong, who will be fielded there.

“Although I am not contesting, I am still dedicated to the party. I will do my best to help the party win the three seats,” he said.
