PETALING JAYA: Umno’s former Johor Bahru MP, Shahrir Samad, has confirmed that he will not be contesting in the general election, saying he must first clear his name in court.

However, he said he will still lead Barisan Nasional’s machinery in Johor Bahru to help the coalition’s candidate win.

“I am defending my integrity and good name in court. It wouldn’t be fair for me to ask the Johor Bahru voters to clear my name.

“I need to clear my name first through the judicial system,” he said in a Facebook post.

The former minister is facing a charge for money laundering for allegedly failing to declare RM1 million as part of his actual income to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) in the tax return for 2013.

He is accused of receiving the money, believed to be from unlawful activities, from former prime minister Najib Razak through a cheque.

The offence is alleged to have been committed at the LHDN Duta branch at the government office complex on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim on April 25, 2014.

The charge, framed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, provides for a maximum fine of RM5 million, or imprisonment for up to five years, or both, if found guilty.
