Maria Chin’s replacement best bet for PJ, says Rafizi

Rafizi Ramli said Lee Chean Chung will replace Maria Chin Abdullah as he fits the bill of a ‘highly-educated Chinese’ who has the energy to move around.

PETALING JAYA: The decision to drop Maria Chin Abdullah for the Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat was in order to meet the demands of the electorate, says Rafizi Ramli.

The PKR deputy president said the PJ seat was a unique one that required a “highly-educated Chinese” and one that had the energy to move around.

He said the ideal candidate was also one that could handle civil society groups, adding that it was a quality the party saw in Lee Chean Chung, a two-term Pahang assemblyman.

“Lee fits the bill and he is among a crop of future Chinese leaders that we are grooming in PKR. That is why he earned his role in the supreme council. He is currently in charge of the party’s digital campaign.

“He fits the bill for the very difficult criteria we have for PJ voters,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a party event in Ampang last night.

Chin, the former chairman of electoral reform group Bersih, won the seat in 2018 with a 57,137 majority against candidates from Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS.

Lee, who was born and raised in Kuantan, is currently PKR communication director and part of the party’s supreme council. The 41-year-old previously served as Petaling Jaya Utara PKR youth vice-chief in 2010.
