Zafrul has reached out, wants to meet, says Dr M

Finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz is believed to be eager to discuss with Dr Mahathir Mohamad his ideas on the national recovery plan.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has revealed that finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz has reached out to him this morning to arrange for a meeting.

According to an Astro Awani report, Mahathir said he believed the request for a meeting is related to the national recovery plan (NRP).

Earlier this week, it was reported that Tengku Zafrul had been appointed as the coordinating minister for NRP.

Mahathir, who is Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister, said he has yet to give Tengku Zafrul an answer on the meeting.

“We want to see (how the NRP is implemented). To set up a body is easy but to do the work, to reduce the number of (Covid-19) cases, requires a lot of new ideas.

“I do not know what ideas this finance minister has on reducing (Covid-19 cases) but he asked to see me.

“I don’t know, I haven’t decided. I heard (he called) this morning,” he said after visiting the vaccination centre on Pulau Tuba, Langkawi.

Mahathir said he hoped the government would not add to the dissatisfaction among the people with plans he described as useless and only worsened the situation.

  2. Good opportunity for Toonsie to scold this Twit, why on 7th June 2020 he had said $3 billion was not enough to settle with the Jewish Bank Goldman Sachs, then 4 months later, on 22nd October 2020 he settled for $2.9 billion.

KUALA LUMPUR: US$3 billion (RM12.8 billion) from Goldman Sachs in a settlement over the 1MDB scandal would not be enough, Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz told Reuters, ruling out a figure that is far higher than the bank offered last year....

...“If it’s US$2 billion, I can say, no US$3 billion, no,“ he added. “As long the amount is not something we think we can accept, then we continue with the legal case.”

Goldman Sachs has agreed to pay $2.9bn (£2.2bn) to settle a US-led investigation into its role in the 1MDB corruption scandal.

The settlement is expected to draw a line under a years-long saga that has cast a shadow over one of the most recognisable names on Wall Street. Goldman Sachs’ Malaysia division also agreed to plead guilty to violating foreign bribery laws linked to the alleged looting of the country’s sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB.

  3. Not sure why the finance minister deems it important to meet the old fool.

The old fool must be preening like a peacock.
