WASHINGTON: The US department of commerce is weighing an enforcement action against Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday citing people familiar with the matter.

President Joe Biden’s administration is looking at an enforcement action against the company under its online security rules, the report said.

The administration ramped up its national security probe into Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus software last year as fears grew about Russian cyberattacks after Moscow invaded Ukraine.

US regulators have already banned federal government use of Kaspersky software.

The US commerce department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, when asked for a comment on the report, said it does not comment on any potential company specific actions.

The department “is committed to fully exercising its authorities to protect Americans’ sensitive data, and to working with Congress in a bipartisan way to adapt to evolving risks”, it said.

Kaspersky Labs did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The reported enforcement action on Kaspersky follows the introduction of a new US legislation that would allow the White House to ban China based TikTok or other foreign-based technologies if they pose a national security risk.

  1. Kapersky Lab has for years been alleged to be themselves a creator and purveyor of viruses, malware and trojan horses.
These suspicions have been around more than a decade, so they have nothing to do with the current conflict over Ukraine.

    1. Mfer, u know what's an allegation?

Up till now, there is still no, zilch proof of yr Kapersky Lab fart!

Yet, u have conveniently ignored the eavesdropping backdoor of iPhone, the unauthorized hidden Trojan app of Google! They r proven many a times all-over the world.

So what have u, or yr idol done to iPhone & Google?

  2. Don't forget Blackberry smart phones too. Proof so far only found against US and the West but none against the Chinese. Either the Chinese technology are superior so much so that no one else can find the backdoor or it is mere allegation and evil smearing by the West. Either way that means the other evil allegation of China stealing US technology is also bullshit.
