Preparations underway for state polls after winding-down of Aidilfitri celebrations

THE final preparations for the forthcoming elections in six states are expected to pick up pace as the term of the Selangor state assembly is set to expire in slightly more than two months.

This is as major political coalitions get over the Hari Raya Aidilfitri formalities and move on in earnest to deciding the seat distribution for the state polls.

According to Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, discussions at state and central levels were underway to build rapport between the coalition and Pakatan Harapan.

“This process has not encountered problems and our cooperation will be further enhanced,” he was reported as saying by The Star yesterday.

Zambry, who is also the Foreign Minister in the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led unity government, acknowledged that a general understanding on seat distribution had been attained, although he noted that the details have yet to be ironed out by both coalitions.

He further asserted that the election machinery of states that are not involved in the polls would also be mobilised to lend assistance.

“They will go to the ground and help in a show of solidarity and to ensure victory for all candidates of the unity government,” he said.

For context, the Selangor state polls is set to automatically dissolve on June 26, with the state polls to be held within 60 days (by Aug 26).

Despite the differing dissolution dates of the five other state assemblies, PH and its allies alongside the Perikatan Nasional coalition have consented to holding the state elections simultaneously.

The Kelantan state assembly will automatically dissolve on June 28, Terengganu (July 1), Negri Sembilan (July 2), Kedah (July 4) and Penang (Aug 2). – April 25, 2023
