Penang South Island project gets Putrajaya’s final approval

The approval was given by Putrajaya with 71 conditions under an elaborate environmental management plan.

The Penang South Island project had received fierce opposition from fishermen, environmentalists and the G25 group of prominent retired civil servants over concerns that it would adversely affect marine life.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang South Island (PSI) project has been given the final approval by federal environmental regulators.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the approval was given by the natural resources, environment and climate change ministry with 71 conditions under an elaborate environmental management plan.

“It must be stressed that all reclamation work would begin once the environmental management plan is given the approval,” he told reporters in Komtar.

The project previously received fierce opposition from fishermen, environmentalists and the G25 group of prominent retired civil servants over concerns that it would adversely affect marine life.

  1. This project is a big issue among the Malay community in Penang, due to the perception that the interests of the fishemen community in the area are being pushed aside.

The State Government has actually been very supportive of the fishermen in general, but this single issue is just so emotivem

  2. "the perception that the interests of the fishemen community in the area are being pushed aside"

Wow… just check the current living state of these fishermen as in "kais pagi makan pagi, kais petang makan petang"!

Just another blur-sotonglish behaviour nurtured with ketuanan narratives?

Improvings in daily livinghood by new developments around the area r been overshadowed by meme-ed kwtuanan fears.

R these fishermen forever destined to be subsistent fishing folks?
