KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 — Opposition party Bersatu has yet to hear from Khairy Jamaluddin who was sacked Umno if he will accept its offer to join the party where he could be nominated in the upcoming election in six states, Utusan Malaysia reported today.

The newspaper cited Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris as saying that the invitation to Khairy was made by his party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the latter’s house after the expulsion from Umno in January.

“In that meeting, Tan Sri Muhyiddin offered Khairy to run on Bersatu's ticket in the state election if he was still interested in politics.

“However, there are a number of conditions set, among which are that he has to submit a form to become a member of Bersatu first, and the seat he contests will be determined by the Perikatan Nasional leadership,” Razali was quoted as saying.

He added that Khairy had asked for some time to think it over, but did not disclose how long the latter has.

Razali said he would personally welcome Khairy, a former Umno Youth chief, as a member of Bersatu as long as the latter abides by the party’s decision on where to field him as a candidate in the state election – whether it be in Selangor or Negeri Sembilan.

Khairy had been MP for Rembau in Negeri Sembilan for three terms since 2008, but was fielded by Umno in Sungai Buloh, Selangor in the 15th general election last November where he lost to Pakatan Harapan’s Datuk Ramanan Ramakrishnan.

Khairy was sacked from Umno in January with 44 others for criticising the party leadership. He later said he would not appeal the decision.

The former Youth and Sports minister has since received a plethora of offers, ranging from politics and academics to corporate offers, he said in a radio interview in January.

Razali also told Utusan Malaysia that Bersatu will welcome any former Umno leader who could strengthen his party.

“As we all know, many Umno leaders have been expelled from the party. If they are able to further strengthen Bersatu, there is no harm in them joining,” he was quoted as saying.

  1. Khairy joining Bersatu will just be confirmation (to me , anyway) of Khairy's opportunistic , principle-free political ambitions.
He had a mildly successful , short in innings as Health Minister, but nothing to shout about in terms of his overall trajectory.
