PETALING JAYA: Parti Kemakmuran Negara (PKN) will seek a judicial review to challenge the home ministry’s decision to reject its registration as a political party.

Brig-Gen (Rtd) Abdullah Mohamed, who leads the party which comprises military veterans, said the decision today left them with no choice but to go back to the courts for a remedy.

Lawyer Lim Wei Jiet will represent PKN. Lim is also a co-founder of Muda.

In a statement, PKN ’s founders said the decision to reject its application was disrespectful to military veterans who had sacrificed so much for the country.

“(These veterans) merely want to exercise their constitutional right to form a party in order to leave a better country for the next generation.”

The founders’ said veterans were “at a loss” over the decision, as “absolutely no reasons were given” to justify it.

“To add salt to the wound, home minister Hamzah Zainudin didn’t even have the courtesy to sign the letter informing us of the rejection,” they said, adding that the document was signed by an official from the ministry.

PKN had applied to be registered as a political party on March 9, 2021, but the Registrar of Societies (RoS) – which comes under the home ministry’s purview – rejected their application on March 16 this year. PKN appealed the decision.

On July 7, the party filed a judicial review in the Kuala Lumpur High Court against the home minister’s delay in reaching a decision on their registration appeal.

On Sept 21, the Kuala Lumpur High Court allowed the party’s application to challenge Hamzah’s delay in deciding on their appeal regarding their application as a political party.

Judge Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid also directed the home minister to make a decision on PKN’s registration appeal within 14 days from Sept 20.
